Driving to BWI

At the end of June I'm flying out of BWI but first I have to drive from Leesburg to get there. I will be leaving at about noon (earliest I can get off work) and my flight leaves at 3:30 - cutting it close I know so I need a little advice on getting there!!

Mapquest provides two options for getting there in a hour and a half and about 70 miles. Considering traffic does anyone know which way would be better? I'm familar with the beltway and I know it can get backed up but a little nervous going the Maryland way since I have no idea what to expect!!

1) Take 15 up into Maryland to 70 for 35 miles then get on 100

2) Take 7 over to 495 and N on 95

Any thoughts, suggestions, advice etc?

TIA

Re: Driving to BWI

  • I would think that traffic would be lighter around noon on the major highways, so barring any accidents on the beltway and 95 I think you would make better time with option #2.  Also I am more familiar with that route so that could also be why it is my preference.  15 would probably have a lot of lights and be more local roads so it would be harder to speed.
  • What day of the week is it?  If it's Friday the beltway can be a mess beginning fairly early (like noon).  Even so, I'd still pick option #2 with a slight change.

Can you take the toll road (267) to 495 to 95?  Rte 7 has tons of lights and it seems like it would take forever on 7.  The toll road would be a lot faster.

Rt 70 and 100 in MD are large highways-both at least 2 lanes.  I haven't lived in MD in a while so I'm not sure if they get backed up or not, but you won't hit lights on them.

  • Thanks!! It is on a Thursday so it shouldn't be too bad yet like it would be on a Friday!! And not a fan of the extra needed to pay in order to use the tollroad and it does take us a little out of the way meaning we'd be on 495 longer I believe.

I've gotten a few more opinions from local friends and it does sound like it's worth the risk of traffic to get on the beltway!

Glad to have more advice - again thanks :)

Now if only gas will continue to go down I'll be MUCH happier!!!
