With DD, we stopped at Target on our way home from the hospital to buy some clothes for her. So, in our case, as soon as possible. I just hovered to make sure no one got to close or tried to touch her until she got a little older.

I think DH insisted we keep DS in the house for at least two months before we finally took him out. I think he was waiting until DS at least got his first round of shots.
We waited about 6 weeks, but it was flu season so that's why we kept her inside. We wanted her to build some antibodies before taking her out with all that flu junk going around.
No siggy pic until TB gets rid of Twitter and FB links
I made it two weeks before we took Olivia to Serranos and Kohl's. It was only that long because it was freezing cold outside and I hate the cold!
We just didn't let anyone touch her or get too close. People Oooh and Aaah, but I never had to tell someone not to touch. Most people know better with a small baby.
Pretty soon. I was more comfortable taking her out in stores where she would be safe in her stroller. But I waited to take her out to parties or social events where people would want to hold her and there'd be a bunch a snot-nosed kids running around.

We waited at least a month (it might have been more). We weren't anxious to get her out and about, plus our pedi also requested that we wait at least a month.
The day we got home from the hospital, we went to my dad's house with tons of family there (it was Christmas day). The next day, we went out shopping (had to hit up the post-Christmas sales!). I just wore him around, and it was fine.

i'm semi-venturing out today (we've been on lots of walks around the 'hood already). I need to return my rented breastpump and its due this afternoon. should be super quick, but it's still technically 'out in public'!

haha we're thinking of venturing out today too (just to kohl's and target quickly) but i was originally going to wait until after his pedi appt to see what she says...
I know we ventured out a few days after getting home for her first doctor appointment. I believe she was a week old when I decided I wanted to go walk around Target and get food at Chickfila! She was in her carrier and nobody bothered us.

wow. you had the energy to go shopping right after coming home from the hospital?
Julia out to eat for breakfast around 7 days, and then Christmas Mass at 10 days, and and and. I was a little more worried about Julia since it was flu season, but I still got out of the house.

This. We took him out at about 2 weeks and kept him in the carseat.
DS was a couple weeks old when we went to DH's family's Christmas. The only store we took him to until he was 8 weeks old was MIL's candy store. The only reason we went there was because we could go in through the back and stay in the kitchen.
We went to Costco on the way home from the hospital to pick up a trash can to use for her diaper pail. Since it was summer and not flu season, we weren't as concerned about keeping her home for a long time.
Aside for grocery store trips and neighborhood walks, we didn't get out til 4 weeks, as per our pedi's recommendation (like many others, it was cold & flu season). Definitely would have liked to get out sooner!
I think we first took her out when she was about a week old, to Walmart for groceries. She was in the car seat the entire time, and no one came anywhere near her.
Her first (non-family) outing where people touched her was actually today, to visit my coworkers. She had her first round of vaccines last week and is still EBF, so I didn't worry about it too much, but did clean her hands and face before she could start sucking on them after being touched, just in case. (FWIW, she was not in a car seat for this visit - if she was, I imagine there would've been less touching.)
right away. just left them in the carrier and with a blanket over so that nobody would try to touch or breathe on my sweet babies. i go crazy if we don't leave the house at least once each day.
The important thing to remember is that it's not usually LO just breathing the air in Target that makes them sick. It's the caregivers going into those places, touching stuff and then touching the baby. We as parents are the ones who need to be more clean after those outings. So yes, do cover the baby up a little as needed and don't let strangers touch him but if you are good about cleaning your hands before feeding and diapering etc, LO will be much safer.
Also, as a PSA, always wash your hands with soap and water when returning from the grocery store. There are bugs that Purell doesn't kill. All family members should get in the habit of washing their hands when returning from work before touching LO too. Keyboards are naaaasty.

We took DD out to Target the day after we got home from the hospital. I was stir crazy from our 5 day stay. We also went to BRU later I think.
The day after that we went to the pedi and El Arroyo as well as DH's office.
I was actually quite surprised that no one tried to touch her--after hearing how "everyone" tries to touch babies. Everyone was very respectful.
