Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Stage 1, 2, 3 purees

What is the difference? I understand some foods are better to wait because of how they are digested but I see some stage 2 foods like banana and blueberry puree and wonder why they are stage 2. Is it just because they're blends and you should check for reactions first by giving them individually?

Re: Stage 1, 2, 3 purees

  • I think it's mainly a texture/consistency thing.  From what I've been told at work (I work with developmental feeding therapists) stage 1 are only one item/ingredient and are usually runny to transition from only liquids.  Stage 2's are just a bit thicker and can be two textures in one container.  Stage 3's have chunks.

  • I think it's the blends, and possibly texture? As in, 2 & 3 might be a little chunkier. Or, I might have made that up.

  • I think that's part of it and I think they are also thicker than stage 1

  • I tried all stage 1's first and then bought stage 2 of the same foods (they were on sale). Honestly I see no real difference yet, My  (5 m) daughter eats them just the same. Although she really likes her oatmeal cereal thick. I compared them in the store by how fast they shake in the container for thickness, and looked if they had a different texture, and saw no difference so I bought them. I am however going to wait until 6 months and ask her dr about the blends. But at her 4 mon she said any light color to orange foods other than meat (no greens either). So I will be waiting to try more foods as she loves to eat!
  • we are now using stage 2 and some of the foods I add cereal too. some os it is extremly runny.
  • I think it's mostly because of the whole checking for an allergic reaction thing, I haven't noticed much of a texture difference.

  • The difference between 1 & 2 is just portion size. And the blends. They don't want you to mix anything until they've tried them and cleared of allergies. I know nothing about stage 3. DS tried stage 1 green beans this morning and HATED them! I tried again by mixing with rice cereal, but he clamped his mouth shut and refused them.
