Any moms develop an umbilical hernia during pg?

Did anyone else develop an umbilical hernia during their pregnancy?  I did, although it wasn't very noticeable until I hit about 34 weeks and a small area of my skin started to bulge slightly and get numb just above my belly button.  My MW diagnosed it as a hernia but we didn't discuss treatment at the time.

I still have two weeks to go before my 6-week checkup but was curious to hear about anyone else's experience.  I'm curious about a) how we will treat it and b) how much it will affect my ability to get back to lifting at the gym anytime soon.

Right now it's tender to the touch and bulges out very slightly above my belly button.

Thanks!

  • I developed one during my last pregnancy.  It took about two months PP for it to not bulge out anymore and it's not sensitive at all.  Right after DS was born, I thought for sure that I would always have a lump (partly because my OB told me I would), but it has flattened out.  I can still feel a lump at the top of my belly button but it doesn't stick out anymore.  Hopefully you will be able to get away without having to treat it.  I have a friend who had to have surgery and she still has problems when exercising.  Good luck!

  • I just developed a hernia in my lower stomach below my belly button. My midwife didn't seem to concerned about it.. but it's kind of freaking me out (I'm a first time mom). I'm scared about how labor will go and if labor will just make it worse and cause me to have surgery afterwards. I wish there was more information out there about it.

  • I did and it actually was uncomfortable. It was really noticable too. I had to get my appendix removed a few wks ago and they fixed the hernia too!

  • I'm prego with my 4th....at 18wks today.....I was just told recently that the Large Bump, that never caused any pain over the past 8 years (my first child and first surgery - gallbladder) was indeed a hernia.

My surgeon said he will be taking care of it after this lil one is out (my last)...but this morning I woke up with SEVERE pain, like I've been punched..will update with what the dr says.
