When to call the ped?

Maybe I am being a paranoid first time mom, but LO caught a cold. It has been 7 days and it hasn't gotten any better, maybe a bit worse. He doesn't show the indentations in his ribs when he breathes so I do not think it is anything serious like RSV. The nose frida is helping, but not much. I literally suck out about a half oz of snot a day!

My area is really bad for allergies so I am wondering if it may be that combined with his cold. He is so congested/runny nose at the same time that he wakes up coughing on snot. Earlier today he was crying and started to turn blue until I picked him up, he coughed, and his normal color returned. Scared the cr@p out of me! Thank goodness we have the angel care monitor or I wouldn't be able to sleep at all tonight. So when do I call the doctor? I don't want to go in over a cold and I don't know that there is much they can do. He doesn't have a fever and overall is fairly happy for most of the day. What would you do? Make an appointment or wait a few more days?

Re: When to call the ped?

  • I would call and talk to the dr. and/or nurse before jumping to sch an appointment.  There is not much to do for just a cold, especially at this age.

That is what I figured. It just seems to be taking a long time to run its course, but maybe because he is so young. Last time he had a mini cold (only lasted 3 days) they said unless he has had a fever for 3 days that will not go away with tylenol then  there isn't much they could do. I just feel so bad for him =(

  • I was just thinking the same thing tonight. DS still has a super stuffy nose and sounds like he snoring at night now because of it. I am pretty positive there is not much you can do for LO's this young with a cold besides a humidifier, clearning their nose, and other things such as bringing them into the bathroom if someone is takinga  warm shower to help steam things.

  • Definitely call & inform the pedi- they'll let you know based off his symptoms whether or not you need to bring him in. DS is going into week three of a very similar thing & I just took him to pedi yesterday b/c of the length of time but also it sounded like it moved down into his lungs/chest. Before bringing him in I called weekly to let them know what's going on & they suggested the humidifier, saline drops & raised mattress. After his exam yesterday we learned it's some sort of virus & basically just has to run it's course. She said it's only in his upper airway too, so that was a relief. Def call- u never know & he may benefit from nebulizer treatments, an antibiotic etc. GL!

  • If he is sucking in under the ribs then you need to call ASAP. I'm currently watching DD because she has a slight cold as well and yesterday started coughing. I'm tempted to give her a breathing treatment with DS's nebulizer to help her break up the mucus.

  • I'd call them, especially if he turned blue, even if it was only for a moment.

  • DS had a pretty bad cold about a month and a half ago. I called the pedi and they said to use saline nose drops and use a cool mist humidifier. It was the week of his two month check up so we were going to see the dr anyway. When we went the pedi said DS's chest was rattling a little so he sent us home with a nebulizer to use. It helped a ton. I don't ever think there's any harm in calling. When in doubt I always call.

  • Unfortunatlly it is going around.  Both of my boys had it and now Ladybug and I have it.  I would call your pedi but typically there isnt much they can do.  We have ladybug sleeping in her RNP or on my or DH chest so she isnt laying flat.  This helps with drainage and lets her breath easier.  Sorry Mama

  • We went to the pedi on day three of a cold kinda like this.  They didn't do anything about it, but it was just peace of mind to me.  She told me:  cool mist humidifier, Nosefrieda with saline, watch for sucking in ribs or the starts of an ear infection, prop crib (though she is in RnP so this didn't apply to us).  She also said many babies peak around day 5 of a cold and then begin to get better.  My LO also has not had a fever either.

  • We went to the pedi on Friday b/c DD was very congested and had a fever and it turns out she has an ear infection although she showed NO signs or symptoms of one.  Now she's on an antibiotic so I'm glad we got her checked out.
