Please come talk to me about diaper rashes

In my 5 yrs of parenting, the most I've dealt with is a little redness. Fortunate, I know.

But these antibiotics are just eating up Gabi's little bum.  I'm using damp, soft paper towel doused with California Baby Diaper Area Wash - just patting the area, covering with Triple Cream.

She has several little 'blisters' (for lack of a better descriptor) on her bottom, and raised, puffy red areas around her vagina and where her diaper gathers around her legs.

Any tips?

Would it be better for her to use cloth diapers?  She's pretty miserable, and waddling like a duck. I can't really do diaper-free because the diarrhea is pretty bad, and as bad as it hurts, she's trying her best to keep up with everyone else.

Re: Please come talk to me about diaper rashes

  • If she's on antibiotics, it might be yeast.  Try Lotrimin.
  • I swear by A&D ointment instead of diaper rash creams. Also, soaking in the bathtub with baking soda in it helped Jake a LOT when he had the blistering chemical burn/rash. Also, I put him in a cloth diaper (that I had for burp rags) until bedtime. HUGS- hope she feels better

  • Nothing new from me than what other's have said...when DD2 was on constant antibiotics for EIs, she'd get some diaper rash that was probably caused by yeast.  Do a luke warm baking soda bath three times per day for a couple days (don't skimp on the baking soda), after each bath, use lotrimin and then cover with A&D (just the yellowish ointment, not cream).  Every other diaper change, use A&D--again, don't skimp!

It worked for my daughter (it got so bad she'd have open sores Sad).  Also, while she's on the anitbiotics, make sure she's getting yogurt to replenish the good bacteria.

ETA: The bath/lotrimin/A&D regimen was the nurse's line suggestion from the pedi when I called for DD.  They recommended staying away from any "cream" because it doesn't wipe off as easily and therefore causes more irritation.

yes, the ointment, not the cream and I slather that shiit on there :)
  • Sounds like a yeast diaper rash, DD1 used to get those. The pedi would always tell us to put Lotrimin on that type of rash. We'd also put baking soda in the bathtub when we had to give her a bath. Call your pedi in the morning and ask about the Lotrimin. I hope she feels better soon. :(

ETA: I almost found it better to use disposables when DD1 had that kind of rash. They seemed to keep the area drier.

We never did get the A&D smell out of her pajama pants--we would COVER her in it!  Stick out tongue

hahhaa! We have a pair or two of pants that still have the smell and a little "stain" on the leg of it. :) But it's worth it to me, that stuff works SO well.
  • We saw her Dr. this a.m. - she verified it is not yeast.

I tried the baking soda last night.  She screamed bloody murder - for serious.

I'll grab the A&D in the morning.

  • When my guys were newborns, they all had awful rashes during those first few weeks until their systems cleared out all that junky gross poop. My pedi recommended using maalox. Put it in the fridge, then use a cotton ball or paper towel and smear it on generously. It will neutralize the acidity in the urine and poop and the cold helps ease the discomfort. She said to use it esp at night when the diaper isnt changed as often. Just lather it on and put the diaper on top. I have also had success with max strength desitin. Smear a ton of it on and apply aquaphor on top as a barrier. The zinc oxide in it works well. Poor kiddo :-(

omg poor lil girl!!! Was the water too hot? When you have a burn/rash it hurts if the water is too warm.

No, it was pretty cool, per EK's suggestion.

This makes me so sad :(

I really hope she feels better soon. Did you ask about the claritin? Are they still giving her the antibiotics? How were her ears this morning?

With the triple paste, we just kept it thick and wouldn't wipe it all off through changes. Squirt with water, pat dry with soft burp cloth, coat with more triple paste and powder. As long as you get the poop and pee off quickly, the paste should stay pretty "clean???" I know it sounds gross, but it worked and poop didn't stay on him.

    Poor girl and mama!

I did ask about the Claritin - said it was fine, but I totally spaced picking it up.  I was too busy finding the probiotics packets. Her ears looked good, actually.  not bulging, but still red/inflamed. We are supposed to continue the AB. We're going to ENT, I'm just waiting on a few to call me back with 1st available appt  - I'm hoping to get somewhere this week so I can maybe end the AB early.

She cried herself to sleep tonight.  And momma cried too. Sad

Here is the diaper rash cream recipe i got from this board, I believe Co is the original creator? Anyway, here it is:

Equal parts Maalox liquid (I use mint flavour) for the burn, OTC anti-fungal for yeast, 40% zinc diaper rash cream (any brand but must be 40%) for the protectant factor and corn starch to thicken. The measurements don't have to be exact...if it's too liquidy add more cornstarch, too thick add more Maalox. And don't make a huge batch, it gets thicker and thicker as the days go by. I make enough to fit in one of those small square baby food containers which lasts a few days, but the rash is always HUGELY better after the first application.

     Thank You!

I'll try anything - but the part about being better after one application - I may just run to the store when H gets home.

I definitely think you should try this.

But I totally know the exact diaper rash you're talking about.  DD3 gets that every so often, and its soooooooo painful for her.  And then DH and I end up feeling AWFUL too b/c there's nothing we can do to really help her when changing her (esp. if she's poopy).  Good luck.  I've been there and it stinks.
