Pregnant after a Loss

At what point do most of you plan to/did you register?

There are tons of registry-related posts popping up on my BMB, and I just shake my head and think "too soon, too soon"...but is it? At what point do you plan to, or did you if already done, start a registry? I just don't feel ready (or educated enough to know what I need) but know that I may never really feel "ready" in some respects.

Re: At what point do most of you plan to/did you register?

  • They're popping up because y'all are hitting anatomy scan time.  We told our families we'd begin registering around 24 weeks.  I think we were around 25 weeks when we did the first one and we did the second store this past weekend.  I need to do one more (as we just discovered yesterday that the first store is not in DH's hometown) this week.

The thought of registering kind of gives me panic attacks. So not for a while. Probably not for at least another month or two. Our families really want us to register but I'm just not ready.

  • You're not too early! I don't know exactly when we'll start but I do know that my shower is going to be around 27-28 weeks (because it's twins and my ILs will be in state for one of my SIL's wedding) so we'll probably have to start around where you are so that we can get it all done/ adjust/ and still leave time for people to actually use it.

Are you going to share your registry with us? I'm curious what folks are registering for. We are doing as much used as we can (for a variety of reasons but DH and I committed to being as "green" as we can with this LO) but I'm always interested to stalk other ladies registries!

  • I started a "pseudo registry" under a fake name at walmart, just becuase I found a crib that DH actually LIKED, everything I've added has been online, and it was mostly furniture.  I will probably finish it and make it public at the 25 week mark, I would like to hold off on any showers until October/November.

Its still really a work in progress and nowhere near ready to be shared.  I probably won't share much on TB though, not a fan of having my name out there in cyber space.  Could maybe do a C&P of it somehow without our names...not sure.

  • We did ours around 24/25 weeks. I wanted to wait until after v-day.

Also (totally unsolicited advice alert), I highly recommend checking out the blog www.lucieslist.com. She has a TON of great info on stuff you should (and shouldn't) register for. Plus, she's pretty entertaining. If you sign up for her email list, you get access to her handy registry checklist, and she also sends out weekly emails that correlate to how far along you are. They are pretty entertaining, too.

  • I did as soon as someone officially offered to plan a shower for me, which about a week ago-so around 18 weeks. I know it's early, but I have been slowly adding an item here or there, I'm nowhere near done.

I actually have 3 registries-Target, BRU and Amazon. I know that seems crazy but I will definitely be having 2, and probably 3 showers, and no one store had everything I wanted. It helps me keep track of what I want to buy too, especially the Amazon one, I don't expect many people will use that but it streamlines the process for me.

If anyone wants to look at mine, give me a PM and I'll get you the links....I don't know if it's anything too exciting, though...

  • With DS I registered about 24-26 wks. This time I have one for myself only that is more of a to buy list much later (and I want the completion for the stroller). I don't plan to give it to anyone except our parents if and only if they ask.

You can start one for yourself and not publish it. That will give you lots of time to research and change your mind. It is a great organizational tool.

  • Definetly not until some time after 24 weeks for me.  V-day will be a big milestone to pass after losing a baby  pre-term labor and seeing that they couldn't do anything for her until after 24 weeks.  I shake my head at those posts too and hope that they never have to experience anything like that.  Thankfully I hadn't registered yet last time when that happened because it would've been that much harder to have one more thing to deal with. But of course to each their own, everyone has to be comfortable with their choice that's just mine.

I hope that when you do feel ready enough to start your registry it goes as smoothly and calmly as possible.

  • I started a registry before I even got pg last time.  But it was because I was doing a lot of research on baby gear and getting advice from my SIL after she had just had my niece.  I kept it private and more used it as a way to save stuff that I liked or read good reviews about.

I started editing it with this pg when I was probably 8w along or so, since there were a lot of things on there that were not available any more.  I didn't make it public for this pg until after I knew the gender.

I have some items I've picked out and added to my private Amazon wish list, just so I can come back to them later.  But I don't think we will start our official public registry until after v-day.

This is how I approached it.  I actually started doing this with our first pregnancy, because I'm a big research freak & it takes me forever to make decisions.  The Amazon wish list was a great place to keep track of the items I liked.  Once I got pregnant again, I went back over the list & added some new things as I got new ideas.  I'd DEFINITELY recommend at least starting your research now, as it can get overwhelming really quickly!

The official registering started around 24w (I think) & we have registries at BRU & WalMart.  WalMart was NOT my idea, but you can find a lot of popular brands/items online there that are MUCH less expensive there than anywhere else, so it's a nice option for guests.  (Be warned, though:  you can't register in the store--at least not here--& their inventory seems to fluctuate quite a bit.  Most of our family/friends will be ordering online, & it's the closest option for people here locally, so that's why we went with it.)  It took me a few weeks to get it solidified, & I still go back & tweak every so often.

One other suggestion:  DH & I learned the hard way at our wedding to only register for what we really want/need.  (We have some very lovely cocktail shakers & decanters that are just collecting dust.)  So a lot of "little things" didn't make the cut for this registry (small things we thought were important included bottles & pacifiers, some plain onesies, & CDs to use as burp cloths).  I didn't put any toys, outfits, nursery decorations or anything like that on there, because I figure we can pick those up along the way.

Sorry for rambling, but I hope this helps!!!  GL with your research/registering!  :)
