Hello Everyone...Quick ? :)

Hi everyone! Smile I don't ever get on this board but I had a quick question. My sister and her GF are planning on having kids and keep bringing up the topic of me having their baby. I have no problem with this at all. As a matter of fact I'm honored! My question is: have any of you used a family member as a surrogate and how did it go? Was there a lawyer involved? Who's insurance is used?

TIA!!!

We never considered this, but what an awesome relationship you must have with your sister!! I think there would be.lawyers involved for the parental rights issues (eg, I would want to legally adopt the baby for a bunch of reasons ). I don't know about the insurance...I guess they could pay all expenses, or you could use yours since you'd be pregnant and they could agree to pay any costs for you and the baby. Good luck!

I do have a great relationship with my sister! We are 13 months apart and have always been super close! IDK what sperm would be used, but they want me to use one of their eggs, so it would definately be their child. I am going to ask my OB who I am also friends with how to go about this as well. I was just hoping someone here would have some insight for me! Big Smile

I've never heard of lesbians using a surrogate , though I don't really see why it would be any different than gay men doing it which obviously happens, though we don't have any active men on this board.  You would definitely need a lawyer, and state laws differ a lot.  In many places the baby is still legally yours to relinquish at birth and they would want to adopt to make the legal situation clear.  I don't have a link handy, but googling will find you a few forums for surrogates where you might be able to find a lot more information.

You will definitely need lawyers and this won't be cheap.  A fertility specialist will likely cycle you and whomever's eggs you are using at the same time.  Your sister and her GF will need to pay for their medical costs, your medical costs, and the cost of sperm (assuming they choose to go to a bank.  If they choose a known donor that's an entirely seperate issue).  My two best gay guys were going to have my bff carry and use the egg of one of their other female bff's (does that make sense?).  It was possible but very very expensive and there were plently of legal hurdles to jump ( in the end they choose not too).  So yes, it is totally possible.  I say step one is to contact your insurance and their insurance to find out exactly what is and isn't covered.  Then contact a lawyer specializing in family law and if possible LGBT families.

    Good luck!
