"Dangerous" to put a crib next to a window???

(xp from Toddlers 24+)

Working on furniture placement in baby GIRL #2's nursery :)

Her room is an awkward shape and right now the ideal spot for her crib is against a window. It seems unsafe to me but I'm not sure why... we live in S. Texas and do not have severe weather.

Here is a pic of the crib. It is 60 inches wide.

This little "nook" is 63 inches wide... and is really the perfect place.

Here's a better pic of the room.... I am cleaning it out which is why it is so bare...

WDYT? Okay to put the crib there or should I find a better spot?

TIA!

Our best spot is under a window too. I'm not sure -- maybe it could potentially get really hot right there? Would like to hear other opinions on this, definitely!

  • The room is gorgeous, I love the molding. If that were my nursery, I wouldn't put it in the nook. I know it sounds wierd but I would be scared of a baby snatcher coming in through the window LOL. My husband said that yesterday. Plus, wouldn't the sun shine in LO's eyes? Or what if the window got broken somehow and glass got into the crib. Yikes!

  • I'm not trying to freak anyone out, but the first thought that comes to my mind is that it would be easier for someone to snatch LO right by a window. At least if the crib is on another side of the room there is more time for a creeper to get caught.

  • So I've tried to think of all the "cons." I'm not worried about a baby snatcher, lol :)

The window is on the second floor... and sun isn't an issue as the front of our house faces south... it's actually a really shaded window. And I guess the glass could break??? But how???

    Hmmm.....

  • I would worry about when the baby gets a little older and stars grabbing for things and eventually goes for the blinds/strings. Can you maybe put a changing table there? Or even perhaps your chair/end table and make that your little nook for your time with baby?? Just some thoughts...

I think the danger are the blinds and the pull strings too them.. when babies stand they could pull down the blinds or get caught in the strings etc etc curtains and the like.. that's what I can come up with anyway..

Hail, strong winds, baseball? Probably highly unlikely, but still possible.

  • I think one of the concerns is as a baby gets older and starts to stand and climb is the risk if they lean against the screen when a window is open. It's a surprisingly common accident to have a baby fall from a window because they leaned against a screen that broke or came out. Sad

  • I may be the only one but I don't think there really is anything wrong with putting the crib by a window. Sadly if someone is going to snatch your baby then walking 5' further in a room isn't going to make any difference. Ugh, even thinking about that made me want to cry. There is film you can buy to put on the inside of the glass to prevent it from breaking inward should a situation like that arise.

  • I completely understand your predicament!  We have the same issue in our nursery.  There are only two walls where we can put the crib both of them have windows.  One set of windows is across the back side of a bar, so we put the crib against the other wall which worked out pretty well.  The bottom of the windows line up almost perfectly with the top of the crib.  Now my concern is trying to find a way to keep the sun out of DS's eyes without having to worry about the strings on a set of blinds being a choking/strangulation hazard.

Correction:  The windows are across the parking lot of the back side of a bar.

They sell those little reel things you can put up higher to wind the string around...

  • Thanks for all your thoughts. Our blinds are "child proof" but still for some reason make me nervous. I'm thinking we might just switch them out for plantation shutters... problem solved! :)

I think it's a nice crib, the walls (if those are yours) are fabulous with that trim and molding. Just place the crib somewhere safer than there.

thanks. They are our walls... that's a pic of the exact room where dd#2 will sleep. I'm anxious to get rid of the blue!!! Just need to decide on a color scheme.

I'm siding here. I think the major dilema would be the blinds so if you could put something like a drop shade over it for added protection to keep LO out of that, I think it'd be just fine.

  • I love that room and crib, it's going to be beautiful. :) I would hesitate to put a crib under a window only because there are too many what-if's. I know logically there are very slim chances that anything would ever happen, but just for piece of mind I would put something else there.

  • Earthquakes breaking the glass, baby climbing out the open window, curtains/blinds falling into the crib, cords accessible for climbing kiddo, too hot/cold?  There are a lot of reasons why not to put one under the window.

I agree with this. I wouldn't feel comfortable with it and would try to work something else out.

  • Mini blinds still pose a strangling hazard, even if the strings are childproofed.

I would worry about baby snatchers and falls too, but I'm pretty neurotic about stuff like that.

More likely, your baby would get too hot or cold, or would be easily distracted by everything outside instead of napping.

  • Everyone keeps mentioning blinds and I just wanted to mention that there are cordless blinds pretty widely available.  We have them throughout our house and this eliminates the strangulation hazard.

So glad you asked this! I am in the same predicament and I was only thinking about the potential cold air. After these comments I think I'll definitely stay away from the window, because it's not worth having to worry about the what ifs.
