Can anyone relate?

I had my first ultrasound last Thursday at 8 weeks. We found out we are expecting twins (yay!) and they could only find one placenta, and did not see a split in the sac meaning they share the same sac. We have another ultrasound in about 3 weeks and they will check again, but in the meantime I have been reading up on these types of identical twins and it sounds like their can be complications like twin-twin transfusion and tanglement of the umbilical cords. Has anyone gone through this type of pregnancy that can share their experience?

Re: Can anyone relate?

  • Congrats on your twins!  I personally can't relate, but from what I've seen after being here a few months is that often, later on they WILL be able to detect the membrane separating the babies. Sometimes not until 15 weeks or even a little later.  There are mo/mo twins but very very rare.  Hopefully that's not the case for you, twins are high-risk enough as it is!  Good luck and welcome!

  • Okay that makes me feel better. I'll be crossing my fingers that there's a membrane there! Thanks!

Way way way too early to determine that. Shame on your doctors for scaring you! 12 weeks is the optimal time to find it, but one of ours wasn't found until 22 weeks. It is unlikely (but possible) that your twins will be monoamniotic. Do you recall how many yolk sacs they saw?

  • There were definitely two yolk sacs... is that a good sign?

Very. I think it's 95% of the time, the number of yolk sacs corresponds to the number of amniotic sacs. So please don't worry!

Mine was very difficult to find at even 14 weeks.  At 18 weeks the u/s tech couldn't find it and had to call the MFM in to take a look.

My girls were mo/di.  Even with two sacks if you have one placenta you will be monitored for TTTTS.  I got ultrasounds every other week to monitor my fluid levels.  I went on to deliever at 36 weeks 3 days at my scheduled c-section.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!  Don't spend the whole time worrying- I did and it was a waste of time!
