OMG!!!!

SO I woke up last night to go pee (nothing new) and as i was stretching I got MASSIVE charlie horses in both legs.  I thought I was going to cry to hurt so bad.  I was laying in bed, kicking my legs in the air trying to get the blood flow back to them and H wakes up and thinks Im having a nightmare!  Does anyone else get charlie horses and how to you make them go away?

  • Wow! I haven't had in both legs at once. Ouch! I don't know how to make them go away. The pain just goes away on it's own after a few minutes. I just try to flex my leg and rub where it hurts.

  • ouch mama! i feel for you! i have yet to have a charlie horse but i've had them while not preggo and they suck! i couldn't imagine getting them in both legs at the same time!

i've heard it's best to keep moving while you are experiencing them but i know that's easier said than done. i hope you find a fix! that's awful!

  • Where was it? If its in your calf, then pull your toes up (like you're flexing your ankle). Works like a charm!

  • Don't point your toes!  Instead pull them as far toward your body as you can.

My SIL would tell me "pull your toes toward your nose."

  • When it happens, stretch your leg with your foot pointing upwards towards your leg.  Eating bananas and foods high in potassium helps a little.  Drink lots of water, too.

  • Yes!  They hurt!  I just had a glass of Almond Milk, thinking I need more protein and potassium.. near the end I got them almost every night with DD, I am hoping for less with this pregnancy, they are not fun!

  • I've been getting them in the arches of my feet. Problem is I can't reach down there all the time to massage it out! I try to flex my foot and use the opposite heel to kneed it out....sorry that's the best suggestion I have. I've heard lots of water and bananas help, but I drink at least 100 oz. a day and usually eat at least 1 if not 2 bananas a day and I still get them....

  • When I get one I get out of bed and stand up and lean forward putting my weight on the front part of my feet...works everytime!

  • Pull your feet toward you, then stand up so you dont hurt your muscle.

  • These are awful. I get them when I try to stretch, too. Remember when stretching felt good? *sigh*. What I do is get out of bed and walk. It only take a few steps and they go away almost instantly. Works for me, anyway.
  • I haven't had one in a while, but when I did, I force myself to raise my leg and rotate my foot. Circling it at the ankle seems to do the trick. Gets it gone quicker than anything else I've tried. If I can, I circle at the knee, but sometimes it hurts too much.

Yes---I had them too and it is painful! I've been stretching my legs before bed and drinking more water. That's helped.

  • I have had a few, but not as intense as yours and not in both legs at once. I find they go away if I flex my foot back and forth a couple of times. And I know it sucks because you pee more, but staying well hydrated helps prevent them. I've also heard that the potassium in bananas can help prevent them too.
  • I feel for you!  I got TWO last night, first ones being pg too.  One in my lower calf near my ankle, and another later on that night in my hip.  I lept out of bed both times to stretch.  I had been out in the park all day and it was HOT out, so I'm sure I was dehydrated. I normally drink a ton of water and eat bananas and a good protein diet, I'm hoping to avoid these again in the future!

It is so funny you posted this... Last night I got charlie horses a few times in each leg.  I have never been one to get them before... They were so bad dh woke up and had to help me rub them out.

  • almost every night--- I just let them ease up, try to relax them and not cause more tension and sometimes I'll lightly massage them afterwards.

I've been getting them for 3 weeks or so.
