Anyone work full-time for entire pg w twins?

sorry for deleting earlier.  i'm trying to use a different profile to discuss this pg.

I'm hoping to continue working full-time with the twins at least until 37 weeks.  I'd be on my feet for about 2hrs/day teaching.  did anyone make it this long without bedrest or leaving job while carrying twins?  this is my 4th pg.  am i too optimistic here?

  • Oh wow, I delivered at 37 weeks and 3 days, and I wasn't on my feet for 2 hrs each day. I'd pretty much by then confined myself to my airconditioned bat-cave of a bedroom in the dark eating Tums by the fist full and watching Jeremy Kyle re-runs ( think British Jerry Springer ). I'd pretty much given up on life at that point.

This is your 4th pregnancy though - so your experience will likely be much different than mine.

  • Yes, I worked to 36 weeks (that was a Friday), and my water broke the following Monday morning (36w3d).  I was planning to go to work too!  I was on my feet for at least 2 hrs per day.  It wasn't easy and I personally think it was part of the reason my guys were so little at birth (4'1 & 3'14), but they were fully developed, just small ...

  • I worked full time up til 35 wks 3 days and was induced at 36 weeks...but I had a desk job....I think there are a lot of variable involved and while I would say it is definitely in the realm of possible, you might want to have a back-up plan, just in case...

Can you possible teach from your desk...I know its not ideal, but when I was in hs and one of my teachers broke their ankle, she sat for at least 6 weeks and just had a helper tpe person for writing on the board and such...so maybe something like that would be an option...GL!

  • My twins came at 34 weeks. I worked up until 3 days before. I planned on having more time off before they came, but they come when they are ready not when you are.

  • I was at work at 34w4d when my doctor called and said I was going to be induced that night for pre-e. I had planned to work as long as possible, but had plans in place in case that didn't happen.  I think its fine to plan to work as long as you can, but realize there is a chance you'll need to stop earlier.

  • after my friend delivered her twins at 23 weeks (she worked on her feet all day) and they only lived 4 and 5 days - I had a whole other attitude about working and being on my feet a lot....  I left work at 27w and even before that- i sat down every time i had a chance.

you get one chance to cook these babies.  Work means nothing when you end up having preemies in the NICU for months on end... or worse.

sure- some people work and do fine- but i wouldn't make that a priority... take it one step at a time- knowing you could be leaving work at any minute...  I used to teach - and know how much work and stress it can be on a body.... I would have plans made NOW in case you have to leave work at any point b/c the chances of it happening are quite high -even if you had great pregnancies before.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • I'm planning on stopping earlier for my comfort but my doctor (who is also a researcher and works on pre-term labor) says that as long as you aren't doing strenuous manual labor there is no evidence that working has any impact on when the babies are born.  Some come earlier and some come later, and thats just how it is.
  • I stopped at 27 weeks.  I have a desk job but had to work 14-16 hour days.  My body was aching, i was exhausted, and the stress was too much. Plus I had been told by my MFM that one of the twins was under the 10th percentile in body weight, and I wanted to do everything within my control to ensure the babies are healthy and continue cooking as long as possible.

Originally I was planning on working until delivery.  And I work at a desk all day.  But when I started to get very swollen and uncomfortable and I was going to finish out the week and the go on bedrest.  However, my girls had other plans as that Thurs night, I went into labor and had the girls.  That was at 33w 4d.  I wish I had gone on bed rest sooner.

  • I work full time in an Emergency Room...10 hours on my feet. My husband and I also run a Beef Cattle Farm and so there's another 4-ish hours of doing some pretty labor intensive stuff. My OB has been keeping really tight tabs on me. I thought I would (I know this sounds bad) get off on some bed rest sooner or later, but it doesn't look like it. My BP has been great, no signs of Headachs, some swollen ankles and thats about it. I know a lot of ladies who worked up to birth (with twins) many times.

  • I worked full time (desk job) until 29w.  My b/h contractions were out of control at that point.  I went on modified bed rest (worked 3 days a week for 3 hours each) around then and my b/h slowed considerably.  At my 32w appt it was discovered I had mild pre-e and I went on hospital bed rest until I delivered at 36w1d.

I would expect to go on bed rest and if you don't it will be a nice surprise.  Don't push yourself, as someone said you only get one chance to cook those sweet babies to perfection :)  I found that by 28w I was ready to be done with work.  I was exhausted, in pain (hips, legs, back) and generally over it.  It didn't help that I dealt with serious amounts of b/h every night when I got home.  Not worth it to me.  I was a total couch potato when I wasn't working.

Congrats and good luck!  Some twin Momma's can work the whole time with no issues and make it to term.  Hopefully you are one :)

  • I'm still pregnant....but I'm 31w and I'm still working.   I'm not on my feet at all, just at my desk.  I'm a phD student, so I was doing experiments up until last week.  I've decided that this week I'm only going to read articles and write while sitting at my desk.  It was getting physically impossible to run around the lab doing experiments.  I still haven't felt (or noticed) BH contractions.  I plan on staying as long as I can...God willing.

I feel like I should knock on wood now...I don't want to jinx myself and suddenly go into PTL or something now that I've just written this post.  :)

  • wow, thanks for the input, ladies.  i really appreciate it.  it sounds like i should certainly take it VERY slow after 30 weeks.  hmm, i'll probably adjust my course syllabi so that i can teach the course remotely if necessary.  thanks a lot!
