My DD hasn't really had any injuries (just turned 4). When she was a baby she wiped out and split/ scraped her lip/face pretty bad, but she doesn't remember.
Anyway in the last couple weeks, she has scraped her knees twice. Not even where you see blood, it is like a white scrape (on the pavement). She cries, but then it turns into a HUGE drama - like "don't look" "don't touch" and then she's shaking and howling that it cries, and she goes from hobbling to "not being able to walk".
Tonight it happened right before bed, so it was kind of the last straw... but ti just got worse and worse. I put Bactine AND neosporin on it and she said it made it worse (even though they are no-sting pain releiving antibiotics!). Then she even howled "I want to live!!"...
I was reassuring, but it just got worse and worse, more crying and more drama, she wouldn't even let me touch her and claimed she wouldn't be able to walk tomorrow..
Can anyone relate? Is this because she hasn't really had any bumps/scrapes? Is she being overdramatic for attention? Is it an age thing? I am sympathetic but also wonder when she just gets caught up in her own drama and if I'm feeding into it - not saying I shouldn't comfort her, but perhaps some way to bring the level of drama down. When we came inside on turned on Kung Fu Panda and asked her a million questions and she even laughed, but then she said the part about not wanting to die from her scrape..
Re: Boo boo drama
I'm sorry, but how did you keep from laughing at this?!!!
I agree with pp. We started at a young age just telling DD "you're okay, you're okay" if she fell and didn't really hurt herself like you are describing. We didn't run to her and make a big deal about it ourselves and now she just gets up and gets on with what she was doing. I think they base their reactions off of yours sometimes. Ignore her when possible.
I also agree with "I want to live!!" being hilarious! I think some children are just more dramatic than others. Sounds like yours is very dramatic in general!
Umm, yea.. it was a *wee* bit over the top!!
My DH was rolling his eyes.. but it was right before bedtime so I snuggled her and got out of there!

LMAO! Goodness! I am sure she's just being a drama queen and the pp's advice is great :-)
I highly recommend this book:

It's about a bird who gets hurt playing catch and then turns all drama-llama over the injury. Your DD may see how silly the bird is acting and relate it to how she has acted. It sounds like you have a future Academy award winner there!
