I told y'all recently that the nurses (or techs) do the urine pregnancy tests in the ER now. Pretty cool actually. I get all the excitement with none of the responsibility!! It's the same test as the $1 ones. Recently we got a 'faint positive" as in, just about everyone else looking at it said "Oh, that's not clear enough, it's negative". And I had to remind them that "a line is a line". It wasn't even all that faint as far as bump BFP's go!! Just not the same as the control line.
Anyway, I said out loud "This is why I always preferred digitial tests, there's no question. Just Pregnant or Not Pregnant". A male that I work with said "I guess those are OK if you're rich". I said "If you can't afford to spend $12 on a pregnancy test, you have no business trying to get pregnant". He seemed really offended by this and gave me a dirty look then walked away. I realize of course there are many different circumstances under which one has the need to take a pregnancy test. However, in the grand scheme of things, is that really a rude thing to think/say or just a narrow POV? His wife is due any day now and I don't know them that well so it's possible I just touched a nerve or something ![]()
Re: Poll: Rude or not?
I voted that its not rude but I don't think its true. We can afford for me to stay home with two kids because we don't spend more than we need to. Why spend $12 on a pregnancy test when there's one for $1? Why spend hundreds of dollars on clothes when there's ebay and Walmart? Why lease a brand new car when you can buy a used one?
That's taking it a bit far, but hopefully you get my point
I certainly follow the logic, but everyone is different.
I only buy the digital b/c I'm lazy and I want the window to say pg or not pg.

I'm pretty, um, thrifty (sounds better than saying cheap), and I had no problem paying for a digital test. Walmart sells the 5 pack of Clear Blue Easy digitals for $20 (so $4 per test--cheaper than most of the line tests).
Having said that, everyone has different priorities, and I can see how someone might think a digital test is ridiculously expensive. Unless this guy has really awesome health insurance, he's going to be really shocked by how expensive it is to have a baby.
This is off topic, but....
I'm betting the ER charges waaaay more than $1 for the tests you are using. I'd think it would be better liability-wise to use the digital tests because they are not subject to interpretation. Since Walmart sells digitals for as low as $4 per test, I'd think the hospital could buy them at an even lower price since pretty much anyone with a uterus gets a pregnancy test at the ER.
I've never used a digital. I am cheap though. I bought a bunch of tests at the Dollar Tree and used those. That way I could indulge my obsessive desire to POAS daily from about 6dpo onward.
I can see where someone could take your comment as rude, but it's obvious to me that you did not mean anyone who doesn't shell out the $ for a digital is too poor to have a baby.
Meredith, 6-1-06 and Alex, 11-5-09
target is also 5 for 20$
This.
ditto this. i know plenty of families with 4 kids that would choke at the idea of a $12 pregnancy test but that is because the way they CAN afford their bigger families is by NOT spending more than necessary on most anything
but i take pretty much everything people say in stride and can see tongue-in-cheek when someone dishes it out and wouldn't be offended at all by your statement.
