Suggestions for pushing fluids?

DS has some sort of stomach bug.  Vomited Monday night and Tuesday a.m.  Better Wednesday then vomited again Wednesday night.  Has seen the pedi once this week and was in ER yesterday.  They gave him a shot of Zofran for nausea and a Rx for suppositories.
He is no longer vomiting but just will NOT take fluids.  Has been up for 8 hours and has only taken 4oz.

Pedi gave us panic value of 8oz/24 hrs. and 1 wet diaper for 24 hrs as absolute minimum, but my God how long can we go at the minimum?

I've tried formula, water, pedialyte and he won't take any of it.  Will eat small amounts of purees but no fluids and I am at my wits end.

Any suggestions?  We may just have to go back to ER :(

have you tried offering water or pedialyte in a cup?

DD will take fluids if I offer it in a "new way".

She loves when I put a straw in water and give it to her that way.

  • Have you tried jello or a popscicle. Thats all I can think of right now.
  • Tried the straw and cup.  Didn't think of jello or popsicle.  Will get on that.  Thanks!

Keep 'em coming.  I'm still checking back.

  • What about hydrating foods like applesauce or watermelon.  I know it is impossible to get them to drink if they don't want to!

  • I was going to suggest watery applesauce too.  Also, which Pedialyte are you using?  I think the grape and fruit punch versions are the most tolerable, at least to my taste buds.  The apple and unflavored are not good.
  • I just started putting some crushed ice cubes in a mesh feeder for her to chew on because of teething. Obviously she's getting some of that water. Not sure if pedialyte freezes but you could try that too. DD loved it. I kept having to refill it for her. HTH.

  • ds refused liquids for a couple days when he was really sick (took about 6 ounces in 3 days) . i was super worried, and went to the dr 3xs...and they kept saying he was fine, and not dehydrated. I liquified his cereal more, and tried every other watery type of food, pedialyte freeze, and so on.  but would only take cereal. hated the mesh feeder too. Around day 3, he started to take a more ounces at each feed..and was back to his normal amounts at day 6.

  • Thank you everyone!  Will try the mesh feeder too!  We have one of those.  Never thought  of that.

We actually poured Pedialyte in a bowl and froze it just enough to be able to mash with a fork and feed it to him on a spoon.  Ugh.  Time consuming but we actually got some fluids in him.

  • Our pedi said that if all else fails, use a medicine dropper.  The ones that you put the dropper in and pull up on the plastic thingy (lol).  It will take forever, but it will at least get some fluids in.  Hope this helps and hope your LO gets better soon.
