Childless not by choice

Birth control

Now that you've decided to not ttc anymore are you going to use any kind of birth control?

I was thinking about this the other day and since I've never been on bcp I can't fathom starting now. At the same time there will come a time where getting pregnant will be less than desirable, especially as we get older. And there is no way in hell I'd chart to avoid till menopause. Just the thought makes me want to vom.
Fuuck TTC - I'm moving on.

Re: Birth control

  • Interesting idea. Hormonal birth control make me kind of insane so probably not. I can't decide if somewhere in the back of my mind there is still a hope of "well what if...!!" or if I'm being realistic in that I'll never get pregnant.

  • Right now I'm on bcp. My RE prescribed them with the thinking that it will prevent another cysadenofibroma from forming on my remaining ovary. Part of me doesnt want to take them and when I asked if I should just have the other one removed he said I was too young.

If it doesnt work anyway why not just remove it? I will take bcp pills for the next few months but I'm kind of confused as to what to do...I dont want to take them indefinetly

yes see that's where we are at now- not "trying" by any means (which amuses me due to the number of times I've told people on botb/gp that not preventing is trying) but we currently aren't using any birth control. The rational part of my brain knows that it is highly unlikely but there's just a little corner that screams "you will get pregnant at 45 and your husband at 51 and then you'll basically have switched around the family rearing and retirement stages of life!!!" Don't worry- I'm completely aware of how unhinged that sounds.

  • Nope, but there's not a chance I'll get KU, so it'd be pointless.

  • Unfortunately we have to be really careful. I can get preg. like a champ... just can't have healthy babies.

I did the depo shot before ttc and loved no period and only thinking about it 4 times a year. BUT I did gain weight on the shot - common side effect.

For the 4 years we ttc I used FAM and am quite consistent so that combined with condoms (yay Tongue Tied) is our current choice.

However, DH will be getting a vasectomy soon. He's actually already cancelled on them twice (because I flipped the fuuck out, not cause he chickened out). It just makes the most sense. We CANNOT afford risking getting preg again and this is ONE procedure and we don't have to think about bc again.

  • I was thinking about this the other day.

We are still in the "if the miracle happens, it happens" phase...

But, we must decide on what we'll do soon... I'm 36 and the time between raising a family and having people think I'm the baby's grandmother will be here before we know it.

I would definitely prefer to stay away from BCPs. I hated them.

    We shall see...

  • Great topic.  We're floundering a bit right now on what to do.  We're using condoms or withdrawal right now.  I don't do well on b/c and have tried lots of different ones.  While I'm only 31 I know menopause will hit soon, so that effects our decision as well.  We've talked about a vasectomy for Dh or an IUD for me, but don't really like either of those options at the moment.
