Pad Question for mom's with Babes in arms :)

Questions from other board...

I've found myself standing in the Feminine Paper lane at Shoppers Drugmart over the past 2 days hemiming and hawing over which brand of maxi pad I should purchase for after DD arrives (Midwife says it could be anytime now despite being only 37 weeks). In all honestly I have no idea, I HATE pads so it's been awhile.

Which ones did you find worked the best?? Always Overnights? Always Infinity? Kotex... I'm lost in a sea of things with wings...

HELP!!! (Please <3)

Re: Pad Question for mom's with Babes in arms :)

  • I started with Alway Maxi - super than switched to Always Infinity after a few days.

  • I used Kotex. But I didn't have one with wings. I would get one with wings if I could do those first few days again.

I don't have an outside baby yet, but I read recommendations from BTDT moms and ended up buying Always Overnights for the first few weeks postpartum.  They're huge.

I used Always with wings.  I had some Kotex ones but they were more contoured and it hurt to wear them when I was all swollen.  The Always pads were flatter and didn't rub the lady bits as much.

  • I used/still use Always overnights for overnight, and the regular long ones for the day. Get wings, don't chance it or you might make a mess. The Always are nice and thin, and like PP said, they don't rub against the sore lady parts.

  • always infinity overnights are amazing.  I started using them on day 2 or 3.  I thought they worked much better than the hospital pads.

  • I prefered Kotex, and agree with PP. Overnight with wings is what you need for the first few days.  Then I went to regular with wings.  I still used overnight for nights.  Now (and for about the past week) I use a really absorbent liner.  kotex actually has liners, and absorbent liners (which are a bit thicker).  These are good for me because I no longer need a pad, but need more than a liner.

  • My bleeding had subsided enough by the time I left the hospital that the Always Infinity were enough for me. I did have some Always overnights that I purchased before I delivered, so I used those too, but I didn't NEED that much absorbancy. I do agree, though, that somethings with wings are a must.

  • I also like the Always Infinity. I've gone through a big package of the overnights, and a small package of the regular. I've switched to the Always Ultrathins now during the day (they're cheaper, and they're okay).

And a pack of what ever is cheap for a few ice pads. I still wanted those for a few days after I was home, and the thicker maxipads are nicer for that purpose.

This! They are thin so you don't have the diaper feeling you get with the bigger pads.

  • I would hold off on buying anything. I took a bunch of the hospital ones home and still have them. I'm 12 days PP and I'm back to wearing my thongs with a panty liner ( I had a c section, not sure if that made a difference)

I have a third degree tear so the first few days I used the enormous pads that the hospital provided, in addition to ice packs. Fun times...

When I got home I switched to ultra thin Kotex with wings. I actually got a rash from the wings so I switched to ultra thin Kotex regular (without wings). A nurse at my hospital said it's common to get a rash from the wings if you're not used to wearing pads.

  • I'm only 32 hours postpartum, but my bleeding has subsided quite a bit in the last 12 hours.  I'm taking a bunch from the hospital home with me for overnight, but I think I will be able to use the thinner pads for daytime.

I bought a bunch of overnights, wings, etc for a stash at home.  Now I kind of wish I'd waited to see how much I was actually bleeding and what I'd actually need.  We do live close to Target, CVS, Walgreens and all that so I can go buy them in 5 minutes.  If you're not close to something or DH isn't comfortable buying for you, I'd just buy a few packs of the ones suggested above.

You also might want to buy some of those Cottonelle "adult wipes" to have around (or just use baby wipes).  I have stitches and have to pat dry rather than wipe.  These just make me feel a little bit more clean that the water bottle.

  • I just returned most of what I bought thinking I would need something for a crazy flow.... I used hospital pads the first day and found myself wishing for something smaller the next day.  (same with the mesh panties- they were great the first day)

I have always ultra thin with wings and they're more than enough.

Also- I second pook on the purchase of some cottonelle wipes.  I only had a 3 degree tear, and the peri bottle is great, but the wipes are nice to alternate with.

I was in the same boat.  I bought Target brand Overnight with Wings pads and didn't need them at all.  An ultra thin or panty liner has been just fine.  I used the hospital pads until they were gone, then switched to the thinner (also more comfortable) pads.  Don't buy too many just in case you won't actually use them like me!

  • I don't think brand matters because I change mine pretty frequently, but something long, super absorbent, with wings.  I have Always and Kotex right now.  I am so not comfy in pads, I feel like I'm in middle school!

  • OOo  another vote for the cottonelle wipes! So much nicer on swollen and stitched lady bits than TP. I used it almost exclusively for 2 weeks...and actually now kinda miss it...

PS - I used Always Infinity medium flow w/wings the most. Never used a maxi overnight I bought once I was home; I used leftover hospital pads at night until they ran out.
