when did you start giving DC juice? when to start sippy cup?

Can I give her juice in a sippy cup now vs. waiting for the battle of the bottle and sippy at a year? When do I start giving her juice?

  • Is there any reason you're wanting to give her juice?  We still don't regularly give DS juice at 2 1/2.  He'll have OJ for breakfast if we're out to eat and I don't mind if he drinks juice when we're with friends, but there's really no nutritional value so we don't make it a regular thing.

I definitely wouldn't consider giving an 8 month old juice.  Just give her water in the sippy.

  • It hadn't really even been a thought until a friend of mine started giving her 9 month old juice in a sippy in addition to his formula and meals.  I didn't think I would start it until after a year but wasn't sure if I was missing something?

I'm not giving DD water either...should I be?

This.  The only juice Luke gets is when he sips what's left over from the tropical fruit cups he eats.  Smile

As for when, if you think she's got the coordination to handle a sippy/straw cup I say go for it.  I don't think you'll do any harm introducing it at this age.

She doesn't need water just yet, but if you want to start practicing with the sippy that's what I'd go with. We started giving DD a sippy cup around 6 months and just put water in it.  She probably won't drink much out of it, so no reason to waste formula, kwim?

No, you're not missing anything as far as the juice goes.  IMO (and it's one I've been flamed for, but whatever) juice for kids is like liquid junk food.  The longer I keep my kids content with drinking water and milk, the better.

  • We just do milk and water at our house too.  The kids have juice at parties or sips of DH's OJ on the weekend but that's it.  And even when we have some in the fridge Megan never asks for it, she prefers water or milk :-)

We started straw cups (with water) around 7/8 months, it took awhile for them to get it though and it was just for fun/learning at first.

DS is 3+ and he doesn't get juice except when he's backed-up or if it's served at a birthday party or something like that. He drinks milk or water.

This. We do not give my son juice either unless we are somewhere and that is really the only thing that's available. My pedi highly recommends staying away from juice unless it's for constipation reasons.  When my LO has gotten constipated I will give him a little bit of prune juice.  She believes it's just pure sugar, which in reality it is.  And my LO never craves it or anything.

Liquid junk made me laugh. My cousin is a dentist and hates what juice does to kids teeth. He didn't give his kids juice until 3 and then it was only watered down juice.

    I'm with you 110%.

  • I'd start giving her some now.

I started giving Jakob watered down juice around 6 months.  He's always been good with milk, juice, water and eating enough.  Never had a problem with him.

I never gave Layna juice.  Its liquid junk, after all :)  She got a taste around 2 years old and became obsessed.  She stopped drinking milk completely and only wants juice.  Maybe if I would have introduced it sooner, it wouldn't have been a big deal.  Who knows, though, every kid is different.

  • I'll put a splash of apple juice in DS ice water if he's backed up, but he doesn't get it very often.  And when I say a splash, it's literally like a tablespoon in his ice water.

We started practicing with a sippy at around 7 months, I think.  Just with ice water.  We didn't introduce juice until after 12 months.

  • My pedi said at 6 months that I can start giving her water when we are out on a hot day.  She said if I am thirsty and take a swig out of my water bottle then I should offer some to LO.  I think mainly just to make sure she's hydrated during the harsh Texas summer, though, not that she needs it otherwise.  Water won't hurt at this point.

I'll start a sippy in a few weeks for fun.

If DD never has juice I'd be fine with it.

Me too.  We started giving Kate a sippy of water at 6 months for practice, but she's never had juice.  She's had pedyalite a few weeks ago when she had hand-foot-mouth (we were worried about dehydration) and she now asks for "juice" everyday.  We never give it to her though.

  • We don't give DS juice. I have no plans to start. I know parents who give juice regularly. They also drink a lot of sodas and tea etc. So I think to them they just feel the kids need something less plain than water. We drink a lot of water here so flavored beverages aren't something we have around so it just makes sense for us to not buy any juice for DS.

I don't remember when we started the sippy but it can't hurt to start early.

I think you've gotten some really good advice about juice, but I just wanted to say that the transition from bottle to sippie at a year wasn't really as bad as we thought - the build-up was much worse than the reality of it.  We slowly transitioned and then at a year quit cold turkey.

  • Our pedi said to start giving water at six months so she could get some flouride for her teeth. We just gave her a straw sippy of water at meals and let her figure it out. I'm glad we did it that way because it was really low-key at that age and she figured it out after a couple of weeks, and now she loves her water. My SIL waited until she wanted to wean at a year to introduce a sippy of milk and they had a really hard time getting her kid to drink, so it was much more stressful. But, who knows if it had been easier if she had started earlier.

  • We started giving sippy cups with water around 6 month for both kids.  (when I remembered, which was not regularly, oops)  Abby refused the sippy (she would scream at me and throw it) for months.  I thought we were doomed when it came time to make the switch from bottle to cup.  But, right around a year she just accepted it.

I don't think juice is evil, but I think it is an in moderation thing.  I held off giving Abby juice until she was over 2 years old (made it even longer with candy). It was pretty easy because she was not around it much (did not go to many b-day parties back then) so she had no idea what those little boxes other kids had were and was happy with her water.  Now she gets it with her schools lunches (not sure what I will do next year when she takes a lunch everyday) and at parties.  We keep it in the house (for her lunches) and she asks for it sometimes, and sometimes we let her have it, but it is not an every day thing.

With J he had it much younger. Not idea, but keeping things away from #2 is so much harder!

  • I was a Juice Nazi from the beginning, because yes, technically, it's just sugar and doesn't really have great nutritional value.  With a history of overweight in my family, I wanted to avoid empty calories for DD at all costs. But DD is not a good eater, and our pedi was pretty worried for a while that she just wasn't getting enough calories from enough varieties of foods, so she pretty much told us that if DD was interested in ANYTHING (be it juice, peanut butter, even some of the "allergy" red lights), to let her have it.  DD doesn't get it every day (or even weekly for that matter), but if we're out to eat or we happen to buy some juice for a recipe or mimosas or something, we sometimes give her a bit. I have given it to her many times when she is constipated, sick, or just isn't eating well.  As for the sippy, we started straw and sippy cups around 6 months and DD took to both quickly without a problem.
