We have both a potty seat and little potty. Megan went back and forth btw the two for quite a while. I like the seat because cleanup is easy. Megan liked the seat because she got to go on the big potty. But she liked the little potty because it was more comfortable and it was "hers".
We got several potty books that we read to Megan to introduce the idea, she loved potty book! Even firefighters go to the potty is a fun one (I think taffy rec'd that orig). We also have this one which is a little a more "instructional" and goes through the steps. I also used bring Megan to the potty with me and talk through all the steps. When she was ready we just switched her to underwear and loosely followed the 3 day potty training method. Even if you don't end up following it exactly it has some interesting ideas! G/L!
I know you did not ask, but my only rec would be to wait until he is really ready. (not saying he is not, just a general comment). We *started* with Abby at around 2.5 years. It was very low pressure, just asking if she wanted to use the potty etc, but it was always met with "noooooooooo!" (while it was low pressure, it was stressful for me) We had the books etc. One day close to 3 y.o. she told me one day she wanted to wear panties. I told her ok but that meant she HAD to use the potty when I asked. She agreed and we did not look back. It was so easy when she made up her mind to do it and was ready.
As for recs- we had both a little potty and the seat. Abby was scared to sit on the big potty for awhile so the little potty worked for us. Once she was really potty trained though (after she decided to do it) she went to the big potty with the seat. We had no trouble with the transition. She like "The Potty Book for Girls." (theirs a boy one too)
With J I am in no rush to even start, not even buying the seat and going through the no pressure potty training. I'm sure he will be out of diapers by Kinder.

We only began thinking about it because for the past few days he has told me "poo poo" before he actually went a few minutes later. We are going to monitor this, and I am going to ask at daycare to monitor this as well. If it continues, we will get things ready and try to see if he will sit on the potty to go. If not, we will not push it and as you said, wait until he is ready and try again then.
I just want to be prepared and ready for when it is time.

We have a few potties! two for home and one that travels. the travel one also works as a on the toilet seat. we let him play with them in the beginning.
currently we wear undies except at nap/bed time. most days are dry, but he still has accidents. it's a long process for us, even though _he_ asked for undies.
good luck!

I would start with a little potty and just have him sit on it before bath or on a consistent basis as long he's not opposed to it. Don't push it but have it available if he wants. When he does actually go in the potty make a BIG deal about it. When Nico went he was allowed to put a sticker on the toilet seat. I've also hear of offering a kiss or an m&m when he goes.
Re: Potty Training recs
Here's a post about potty seats:
