Cloth Diapering

Please help a frustrated newbie!

I'd love some advice!  Baby is almost 1 month old.  Using orange-edge GMD prefolds and covers (NB whisper wrap and size one thirsties covers).  Love it for the most part....no blowouts except for the time he was in sposies when we moved!

The problem is that he has REALLY watery newborn poop.  If i trifold the diaper the poo runs onto the gussets and if I use a snappi and angel wing it...the watery part of the poop soaks right through and onto the back of the cover.  I'm having to wash my covers after about 1-2 uses each....extra frustrating sine I'm sleep deprived and still trying to unpack.

I've tried folding up a cloth wipe and putting this under the pre-fold...helps, but then I'm washing dipes daily because i'm running out of wipes.

Here is my dilemma...one of the reasons I wanted to CD was to save money.  I have a bunch of orange- and yellow-edge prefolds and several covers.  When LO goes to daycare in 2 more months, my best bet for continuing CD at DC is to use pockets or AIOs.  So, I'll need to buy more diapers.

Would it be best to invest more heavily in pockets and add them to the rotation now when needed, or buy more covers for the pre-folds knowing that I'll still need to buy some more DC-friendly diapers soon, anyway? If I go with pockets, he's a skinny-butted baby if that helps!

Also, do you recommend any doublers that I can use at this age (10 lbs) that wouldn't add a ton more bulk to the already bulky pre-folds?

TIA.  I really want to continue CDing, but I'm not sure how best to proceed while maintaining my sanity.

  • I'm pretty new too, but wewere using the pfs and just added Fuzzibunz and BumGenius OS pockets and ave been happy with them. Both brands are buy 5 get 1 free right now. DS is 35 th percentile for weight and 90th for height to give you an idea of his body shape. I have no advice on your other questions. Sorry!

  • How much does he weigh?  One size diapers really won't fit until 10, sometimes 12, pounds.  Rumparooz might work now though- they are some of the smallest one size diapers.  The big thing with getting one size diapers to fit is the legs which would be an issue with you since you said he has skinny little legs.

As for the prefolds and runny poop, I had the same issue.  When he was little, Nolan pooped almost every single diaper change and I was washing LOTS of covers- thank goodness I overbought! I've since gotten better at putting on prefolds from watching YouTube videos on it but I know my biggest issue when he was little is that I was afraid I was hurting him so I wasn't getting them as tight as I should have been- keep in mind that even if you are pulling the prefold as tight as you possibly can, once you put the snappi on, it will loosen up a bit.   Another option would be to do a bit of a jelly roll on the thighs to help things stay in there a bit better.

For the wipes- maybe you can grab a pack or two of infant wash cloths- we use those for wipes a lot.  And for the doublers, maybe preemie prefolds?

1.5 weeks ago he was 9 lbs 7 oz.  He hasn't been weighed yet but he was gaining pretty steadily...I'd guess around 10 lbs or more at this point.

Thanks for the tips!   I think I'm getting the diapers on correctly, it's just a matter of the poo being so runny that it soaks right through the diaper and onto the cover...I probably wouldn't care so much if we hadn't just moved.  Between baby care and the house being in chaos...needing to do another load of laundry sometimes gets to me!

DD weighs 9 lbs and we've been using the yellow edged since she was 2 weeks old.  They're way more absorbent than the oranges so the likelihood that he will leak through to the cover is less.  I would try a yellow (fold down in back if you need to) and then jelly roll the sides in.
