Food Allergy

webmistress

In regards to the wax/corn issue, (I am not currently making Asher's food - don't judge, LOL) do you think the skins of fruits/veggies go into Gerber purees? Could it be possible he is reacting to the wax and not the actual food I am feeding him???

I have never heard about the wax being an allergen, so I am googling my brains out. I can't find anything stating that corn might be in the wax. I just want to educate myself before I call our allergist.

And I totally understand the cost of going all organic, we had been doing CSA shares, but even their cost started rising!

  • I just saw your post about alimentum, but we use the powder, so maybe its not a corn allergy? I don't know! So confusing!!!

Andplusalso, you freakin rock for nursing that long with those dietary restrictions!!!

I know I'm totally butting in her, but Alimentum Ready to Feed is actually the only one without corn in it.   I'm 99.9% sure powder does.

"Infant formulas: Enfamil Lipil, Similac Advance, and Alimentum Ready-to-Feed are examples of formulas that may not contain corn. Use only the ready-to-feed type of Alimentum formula because the powdered form contains corn maltodextrin."

DS couldn't handle the Nutramigen or powdered Alimentum because of corn.

  • I'm not sure about the skins going into the purees, but that's very likely. I cannot remember where I read about the wax.

We ended up doing BLW (baby led weaning) with solids. Ari has way too many allergies & we just didn't feel comfortable doing the jarred food - I was worried about cross contamination & we had to branch out from the usual baby foods anyway.

  • The gerber foods, I am not certain they are safe. Most prepared food contains additives and most are corn. Citric acid and other vitamins, minor additives are often corn based.  I can't eat gerber foods.

I wouldn't judge for not using your own home made baby food, I didn't with my first 2 kids who are allergic messes..lol

You may find there is more he can eat if you can make your own baby foods. At my allergic worst (6 foods allowed) I could only eat things I could make and sometimes only specifically from one place because of methods of washing, etc. My diet has expanded as I learned better how to make more for myself and source safe foods. Now I look at the jars of baby food (pregnant w/ baby #3 after a 14 yr hiatus) and I think, hmmm I'm not gonna do that, it'll be so much easier to make it myself LOL

Oh also, I too believe the alimentum powder is not corn free, we used only the ready to feed type with great success
