If your DC has a milk allergy/sensitivity...

What do you give them to drink instead?  Soy milk, almond milk, lactaid, rice millk, etc.?  We think Atalie has a milk sensitivity, as we have noticed that her sleep becomes disrupted every time we have tried to introduce whole milk since she turned one.  Each time, after a couple of days, we would give up and switch her back to formula (upon her pedi's advice), wait a month, and try again.  The sleep issues were the only symptom, but because of that we never made it to 100% milk for more than a day before switching back.  But this week, she got up to two days on 100% milk and then threw up twice, each time right after drinking milk.  So now we are holding off on re-introducing milk at all, and I will start doing research on my own, but I was curious what others here do instead of cow's milk.  We are going back to toddler formula until I am able to read up and meet with the pedi next week to decide what steps to take next.  Any links to good websites for me to research would be appreciated as well.  Thanks, ladies!

  • We do coconut milk and kefir for everyone but Taryn who gets rice.  We avoid the flavored and sweetened varieties.

You may get more answers if you post over on the new food allergy board too =)

  • We do almond milk.  He likes the vanilla flavored but its got a lot of sugar so we are trying to switch away from that.
  • Maybe I should add that she seems to do fine with cheese and yogurt, as well as the dairy-based formula she has been on, it's just whole cow's milk that doesn't appear to agree with her.

  • I originally opted for Goats Milk for the high protein and fat content as she was still drinking a ton of it. Sort of like formula. But now we switched her to Coconut Milk. Currently she is getting Vanilla but I plan to wean her to plain :) I'm glad we didn't do any of the nut milks as she appears to be allergic to many of them too.

You can try the lactaid or lactose free milks first since she tolerates cheese. It may be all she needs.
