D.C. Area Babies

someone remind me that this will end...

We've had a rough few days and I just need some fellow moms to remind me that someday I will sleep again.  DS2 is almost a  month old and we are still feeding every 2 to 3 hours round the clock.  DS1 is almost 3.  I'm exhausted and feel like a zombie!

I know it is temporary and it will end--DS2 will eventually sleep longer than 1 to 2 hours at a time.  It's just hard to remember that in the midst of it.

So, someone please tell me that DS2 will start sleeping longer at some point! :)

  • I'm no expert, but he'll at least start sleeping longer. For the first month of DS's life, we spent every night sitting up all night in our tv room. Now he sleeps from 8 pm - 1 am, 1:30 am - 4 am and then 4:30 am - 6 am. It's not perfect, but it's better.

  • Thank you!  Yes, at least one longer stretch of sleep would be wonderful!  I told DH that if DS2 doesn't start having a longer stretch of sleep during the night (even 4 hours would be awesome) I'm going to consider having DH give him a bottle for the 12 am/1am feeding so I can catch some zzs.

  • It will!  Hopefully sooner than later.  At 4 months we are on the same schedule as MsSaint and if we were talking about my first child, she was sleeping 8 hours at a stretch by 8 weeks.  You'll get there.  Promise.
  • It gets better! You know it does!!  Keep the faith!

(this from a mom of three whose 6 mo. old doesn't STTN yet - now someone please remind me it gets better!)

  • It does, it does, I promise! I was just rereading some blog entries I wrote when DS was your sons age, and I thought oh my word, I forgot what real exhaustion feels like! He was up every 2 hours for what seemed like forever, but around 2.5 months we finally started seeing some longer stretches!

And Artslvr, here's your reminder: It even gets better from 6 months! Stick out tongue DS didn't STTN until about 8 months with regularity, but he learned! You'll get there...and I'm still hoping any future babies we have will be sleepers like your first two!

  • Just remember how fast that first year goes, before you know it he'll be 1! My kids are 2.5 and 4 and the sleeplessness feels like a distant memory at this point. In another month you'll probably be in a better sleeping routine, at least at night, and he may even sleep 6-8 hours some nights. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

  • DS started sleeping progressively longer at 6 weeks.  He was sleeping a first stretch of 5-6 hours and now sleeps 10 hours just about every night at 5 months.  We still have a random night where he wakes up once to feed and we went through the awful 4 mo wakeful which was a whole month of waking once a night to eat and almost a whole week of no naps.  He isn't much of a napper, anyway, but when he won't nap at all, he's a friggin bear.

Hang in there, mama, it'll get better!

  • The only thing that is keeping me going having a newborn and a toddler is co-sleeping.  DS sleeps sooo much better next to us and rolling over to pop a boob in his mouth is so much easier than getting out of bed.  It's funny how you change your mind set about "things I'll never do as a parent" and then you live the reality and do what you have to do to get through it.
