I had my 1st prental exam today and we had all kinds of fun things happen. First, I told the m/w that I have been having trouble peeing - particularly in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning. Her first thought was UTI but an initial dip test came back negative - however, she's sending a sample in for a culture. I have a friend who had to be catheterized in both of her pregnancies for about a week b/c at a certain point her uterus shifted and shut down her bladder. So, that was my first thought - that it had to do with the positioning of my uterus - especially since once I have been upright for a while it's not really an issue (or maybe, as I just read online, it has more to do with how full my bladder is??). She was going to talk to another more experienced m/w as well as a GYN urologist. I expect to be referred to the urologist. (if anyone has had a similar issue, please share w/ me!)
Then she tried to pick up the h/b on the doppler, and couldn't find it. She spent a very long time with no luck. I do have a tipped uterus, so we knew that might pose a problem, but we were able to pick up Cal's h/b at this point right away. Finally she set the doppler aside and did a pelvic/cervical exam - when she inserted the speculum, it really hurt. She suspected yeast and did a swab while in there. Then when she was done she did a visual inspection and noticed the insides of my labia were very red. So she swabbed there too. Initial tests revealed nothing, so maybe it's just one of those things. We'll keep an eye on it. I would never have known had the speculum not irritated that area on its way in.
Then she tried the doppler again, and FINALLY we heard a lovely heartbeat, which measured 170bpm.
All-in-all a good appt., but not without its frustrations!
I am 11 weeks today and just announced to my workplace!
UPDATE: m/w just called - the other m/w knew a lot more about the peeing issue. said it's quite common with a retroverted uterus - esp. retroflexed uterus (which i forgot i had). within a couple of weeks as my uterus pops out of my pelvis it should stop being an issue. she actually said one thing that can help is to get in the bathtub and put my butt in the air and try peeing like that b/c it'll take the pressure of my bladder - HA!!!
Re: Scary appt. today but all is well.
Awww pretty ticker!!! Congrats on 11wks that rocks!! I am sorry your appt was so unpleasant!
I had my MW appt yesterday too and we couldn't find the HB. She tried and I tried (cause I had just heard it on Monday at work). We heard tons of movement by the little bugger, but never got to hear the HB. I was so bummed.
But hey- I have a retroverted uterus too (only diagnosed by my MWs and never mentioned by the RE). So maybe that is why I have felt the same way. I just change positions while I pee and it seems to empty me out (lean forward and back and to the sides).
I'm sorry you couldn't hear it.
It's unsettling, I know. Good thing you can listen at work! I didn't realize you could hear movement...our m/w didn't mention that we were hearing anything at all while she was searching for the h/b.
Oh, I change positions too but sometimes I still can't empty my bladder and have to try again in a few minutes. It comes out SO slow - just a tiny trickle. And lots of stops/starts. This morning I couldn't go at all and had to give it a rest. Fortunately, when I tried again later I was able to.

CONGRATS TO YOU & DH!!!
I'm going in July/August for IVF for #2...YIKES!
YAY!!!! Congrats on the nice strong heartbeat!!! Sorry about the other stuff though- hoping it all comes back ok
You're having another baby, mama!!!!!!
Ugh- then mine is not that bad.
As for the baby moving- I have a trained ear, so I could hear it clearly (DH said he didn't hear anything). The MW said, "babies who move have a heartbeat" and just wasn't concerned. But yes, I would be FREAKING out if 1- I hadn't just heard it on Monday at work, 2- I didn't know that babies were hard to find at this gestation and 3- I hadn't heard a TON of movement in there. I am so grateful that I have a doppler that I am free to use when needed at work. I work again Monday and will definitely be searching for a little heartbeat then.
