Vegitarians - cookbook & blog recs

I've been drinking the Michael Pollan Kool-Aid (although I'm pretty sure he wouldn't approve of Kool-Aid) and as part of that I'm trying to reduce the amount of meat that we eat in our house.

I know there are a few vegetarians on here so I'm wondering if any of you have cookbook or blogs that you love.

I want one good, basic cookbook for my kitchen but there are so many to choose from. I picked up "A Year in a Vegetarian Kitchen" by Jack Bishop at the library and already have a few pages bookmarked.

As far as blogs go, I know about 101cookbooks and already follow her, any other great vegetarian blogs?

  • Allrecipes.com has a lot of veggie recipes. I sometimes just adapt recipes that call for meat by using a hearty substitute like potato, beans, eggplant, tofu etc. I don't really like fake meat, but sometimes use it (tip: it does not cook the same so you wouldn't put it in a crock pot etc). I made curry last week that called for steak cubes, but I used potato instead. It was great. Also made tacos with black beans. Also great. As far as blogs, Savvy vegetarian has some good stuff plus tips on becoming vegetarian.

  • I don't have any additional recipe/site recs... i basically eat the same things all the time and i'm a pretty bad cook.  But i did want to recommend a product: field roast.  It's a locally made, grain-based (soy free), high protein meat substitute *that doesn't taste like chemicals*. I've had a mushroom one (i think it's one of the "roasts") and two of the sausages, apple sage and italian, and i liked all three (but the sausages the best; they're really good in soups).

  • My friend Dana: www.danatreat.com - she's local and fabulous and does veg cooking classes which I go to every month. I'm not even a vegetarian.

  • The cookbooks I use most often are: Moosewood Cooks at Home, Joy of Cooking, and Moosewood New Classics. Deborah Madison has some great, but more complicated ones. There is a vegetarian/vegan group on Facebook from the EFF board, but it isn't very active. Vegetarian Times has a good website with lots of recipes. The hardest part about making the shift is to start thinking about planning a meal around a veg protein source instead of meat. So eggs, cheese, soy, and lots of beans. Also nuts and seeds like quinoa. And you can do just about any casserole that has meat using veggie meat substitutes. Quorn is one that doesn't have a lot of weird ingredients, and is sometimes on sale. I'd be happy to help you with some meal plans if you'd like. I alternate between weekly and monthly ones.

    I reference my Quick Fix Vegetarian cookbook a lot. There are also some good vegetarian crock pot cookbooks, which is like the best of both worlds. Good luck!
