Working/Pumping Question

I have an all day work workshop coming up. Its being held not at my work (where I have access to amazing pump rooms). I'm not even sure my boss knows that I go pump 3 times a day (he works mostly from home and only comes in a few times a week)

Anyway, I can't make it from 8:30 to 4 without pumping. At a minimum, I need to pump once, twice would be better. What do I do? Who do I contact? Or do I just go to the bathroom and pump in the stall?

Also, this event is being held downtown with parking at a remote location, so pumping in my car is probably out.

The event is at a government agency so I know they probably have places for pumping moms.

These are the situations I totally hate and make being a working mom more difficult.

When I was in that position in the past, I contacted the workshop coordinator to ask if there were scheduled breaks and when they would be and for how long.  I assume there will be a lunch hour at least.  Ask that person where where the pumping rooms are, if they have them.  Even if there's not time to get a full pumping session at each break, use the time you have to prevent engorgement and you'll be ok.  Good luck!
  • I would probably end up pumping in the restroom but you can always contact the site where you are having the conference or the person in charge and ask if they have a place where you can pump.  I have always stuck to my schedule of pumping and just missed out on short periods of time of conference.

  • I've so been there! (Literally - all day meetings at various agencies in Sac). Do you know any staffers at the agency? If not, in the past, I have actually approached "strangers" at the agency (always women) and asked if they know of a room. I had success two or three times with that. If that fails, I pumped in the bathroom. Good luck!
  • thats such a drag. i used to just go to my car and pump under my hooter hider but it doesnt sound like thats option. good luck!

This. Def. ask about the breaks, or if you have any control over the flow of the work-shop tell the organizer what you need. If no room is available, and bathroom space is limited (single-stall), consider also your car, if parking is convenient. Bring a nursing cover for privacy and a good amount of ice for the milk (unless you intend to dump) if you have to keep it in the car.

Sometimes at times like these I would pump IN my car right before the seminar, and IN the car right afterward, and then just steal away for lunch (meaning I didn't get to socialize/eat lunch with the class). But you gotta do what you gotta do.

  • Thankfully I've never been in that situation (which means my job is so boring), so I have no advice but wanted to wish you good luck in sorting it out.  I'd try to stick as close as possible to your schedule so it doesn't throw a wrench in your supply but that's just me and my supply was super sensitive when I was at work (it would drop for very little reason).

text would help. :) Sorry, I haven't been there.

  • I've always asked reception where the mom's room was located in the various trainings I've been to. In some cases I let the person running the training know that I will be leaving at various times to use the mom's room, h in other cases I've worked with the trainer to sync up breaks.

Since it's a legal thing for workplaces to provide spaces for nursing moms, I've never had a problem, because the space was already established. :)
