I've been vegetarian since I was a teenager...so a very long time. I've long since based my decision on things like factory farming, environmental and health. It's never ever been a weight control solution for me...even when I was at my best vegan self I still struggled with that.
SO, I've been doing some more research for weight loss (after baby obviously) and thus have read a lot about sustainable farming practices and environmental impact of the ag industry.
I'm not necessarily opposed to going back to some animal products if that's what I decide...but quite honestly, I'm a little scared! It's been SO long. How does one ease back into that? Is it totally gross at first?
Re: has anyone gone from Vegetarian back to omnivore?
When I was pregnant with Jack, I developed a huge meat aversion, so about 2 1/2 years ago. After he was born, I tried to eat meat a couple of times, some barbecued chicken once, a cheeseburger, and some corned beef (all things I really liked before I was pregnant). I couldn't do it. They tasted terrible to me. Now, when I think about it, meat so intensely grosses me out, and the idea behind eating the flesh of another animal is so very repulsive to me....I just can't do it. Oddly enough, though, fish and seafood don't bother me. I don't know why. I have to be in the right mood for them, but I haven't given them up. So for me, I don't see myself going back. But I don't think there is anything wrong with going back!
I was a vegetarian for 7 years. My situation is a little different because when I "fell off the wagon," so to speak, it was because I was craving meat. First was seafood, because I was on vacation at the beach and really wanted some fresh fish. It was really good, so I kept eating it. Next came chicken, and red meat was last.
The only time I was ever grossed out by meat was when I was pregnant. Chicken especially made me want to gag. I kept eating meat because it was an easy way to get enough protein, but I had to distract myself from thinking about it. I still am not a huge meat eater and really prefer seafood most of the time, or small portions of chicken or beef. I am not a huge-honking-steak eater by any means and often still eat a lot of vegetarian meals.
I would love to cut some meat out of our diet. Can you give me so ideas of foods you eat/ate?
I was a vegetarian (ovo lacto) for 10 years. Poultry is supposed to be hardest to get used to I guess because of headaches, but red meat was the hardest to eat gross-factor-wise. There were some nights of me ordering filet mignon because I thought it sounded good and then when it came and I had to face it, I couldn't eat it. Luckily for me, DH was courting me and acted like it would be a great treat for his dog!
That was about 10 years ago (vegetarian from age 15-25, now I am 35.) I didn't used to notice a whole lot of ways my body reacted to food when I was younger. Now that I'm older I do, so I can't imagine having that much of a lifestyle change again.
Although really, I am still usually grossed out by meat and I don't eat that much of it. It's a lot of things, but I think I have texture issues.
