Anyone have to take a "Parenting After Divorce" class?

Our county requires a 2 1/2 hour class when you're divorcing. Unless there's a "parenting by yourself because your ex-husband is in prison" class, I'm not sure what I stand to get from it other than a few hours away from the kids.

Anyone done something similar? What can I expect?

  • My state required 6 hours of that chiz... most depressing two half-days ever... basically they talked about the effects of divorce on kids, and coparenting strategies.  Pretty sure the main point of it was to have another way for the state to make money, since I had to pay for it.

  • I had to take it and it was free. It lasted a couple hours. Basically it just yammered on about kids having THE RIGHT to see both parents and the parents shouldn't fight in front of the kids, blah blah blah. I told the instructor about my situation and how it wasn't in DD's best interest for EX to see her whenever he wants and she gave me some pamphlets about supervised visitation.

  • I just went to mine a few weeks ago (2 hours long, I didn't have to pay and it's court ordered to attend).

It wasn't too bad, but it was surprisingly painful to listen to the stories from child psychiatrist and see pictures drawn by children of divorce. Kids drawing pictures of themselves with pictures of Band-Aids over their hearts, or standing in the middle of two parents with a suitcase.

The overall idea of the course was to tell you get along with your ex-spouse well enough to co-parent for your child's sake.

  • Yes I took that class. It went pretty well. I found it informative and nice to meet other parents going through the same thing.
