How many times a day does Gwen nurse on the weekends? And on weekdays, does she nurse before daycare, when you get home, and before bed?

I ask because a co-worker has a DS a little older than Gwen and they are having a lot of sleep issues with him.  Co-worker thinks it ties to nursing and his son is nursing an average of 6 times on the weekend (when he has 24 hour access to mom).  I'm just curious if this type of schedule is normal for extended BFing.

  • On weekdays she nurses in the morning and before bed. On the weekends she nurses 2-3 times (in addition) during the day, so 4-5 times total. She often still wakes once at night though, so that brings her total up to 5-6 also.

I'd worry less about number of times nursing vs. when he's nursing. Are they still nursing to sleep? If so, that could definitely effect sleep. I've been moving Gwen away from that, nursing her to drowsy, then rocking her a bit and putting her in her crib before 100% asleep. It has improved our nights.

Let me know if she has other questions and tell her good luck!

Thanks! No, he doesn't nurse to sleep, but he does get a 12oz bottle right before bed. I've suggested cutting that way back because I think he might be waking up when he's wet and uncomfortable.  There are few other behavioral things going on but amount of time he nurses on the weekend struck me as potentially being high.

a 12 oz bottle?? holy cow!  when we stopped dream-feeding RB (aka giving her a bottle before bed), she started sleeping so much better.  I read that when they are digesting, they sleep less soundly.

Yeah, I think it's a bit much. In fact JB has started refusing the bottle before bed and she's much younger than him.  I offer it to her, but she hasn't taken it in weeks and has consistently slept 12 hours.

My coworker told me today that last night he only offered his son 8 oz which he took, and then slept from 8pm-6am.  It's only one night but they've NEVER had a night like that so it's major.

  • Holy crow!! Gwen has never drank 12oz at a time in her life. That's two full bottles for a lot of kids!

Hopefully giving him the smaller amount will do the trick for them!
