2nd Trimester

Those who have taken Colace...

My doc said I could take 1-3 pills per day if I needed them. How many do you take and what does it do to you? I haven't taken anything like it before, so just wondering how most people's bodies react to them. I know it's not a laxative, but I'm just wondering if I should expect to be in the bathroom more often after I start taking them or if it will just be back to normal like I was, like a normal once per day or so (I would only start with like 1 pill a day, but I have no idea what I should expect)...

Re: Those who have taken Colace...

  • when i needed it, i think i took 2 at a time.  it didn't give me the urge to go to the bathroom, but when i did, it made it much easier to do so.  it's a stool softener, but it doesn't soften it to the point where you feel like you have diarrhea.  hope you feel better soon!  i'd never been constipated before i got pg, and man alive, i have a new appreciation for how uncomfortable it is!

  • Colace did NOTHING for me.  Thankfully my constipation let up when I stopped the Zofran.

  • I suffer from chronic constipation even prior pregnancy.

I take 2 a day and it by no means makes things super soft or messy...it just helps is MOVE!  Even still I can go a few days without "going" and get really uncomfortable, so on those days I will take 3.

  • Taking one a day did nothing for me. However, I take 2 on days where constipation really makes me feel uncomfortable and within 5 hours I've gone #2. Like the PP said, it doesn't make you feel like you have diarrhea, it just softens things up a bit so it's easier for your colon to get out. Hope you have the same luck with it as I did. It made me feel so much better!

  • I think I am one of the only people to not like Colace.  I had not gone in over a week and I took 1 pill and then had severe diarrhea for the next 24 hours. Now I drink apple juice a lot and stay pretty regular.

  • I just took one every morning back in 1st Tri when I was constipated.  It usually didn't do too much to me, just made it easier to go--more normal and regular.

  • Colace always makes me feel like I have ridiculous diarrhea, but when I rush to the toilet, I find I'm still constipated. SO frustrating. It may make you feel a sudden urge, it just depends on how much you weigh, and how your body reacts to it.

  • Colace doesn't make you go more, it works by pulling water into your stool so it makes it easier to go and makes what is in there come out more smoothly. It just made me more regular.

  • I take it every day - at first one was enough.  Now I take two at night when I go to bed on an empty stomach.  It makes things return to normal for me - thank goodness!

  • im a nurse and work on a high risk pregnancy unit in the hospital. we very often get orders for our patients for colace 1 tab 2x/day. the best time to take a dose is in the morning and at bedtime. you are correct that colace is not a laxative, it softens the stool to make it "easier" for you to go, so that you aren't straining. as you have probably noticed pregnancy and/or prenatal vitamins tend to constipate you and you do not want that. straining to have a bowel movement is never a good thing especially in pregnancy. if you find you are having multiple loose stools a day, try cutting back to 1 tab per day or take as needed if you feel "stopped up"...GL
