Belly Button Question

My baby is 9 days today and her umbilical cord fell off. She hasn't had any bleeding, pus, or redness, etc. But when it fell off today there was a small piece of flesh that looks like a tiny red finger and it bleed a little. Is it possible that it hasn't finished healing or I read it might be a umbilical granuloma. Does anyone have any experience with this?

DD's umbilical cord fell off in pieces. It sort of looked like you describe. She lost most of it at one week, then another good chunk at 10 days. The final little bit just came off today. If it oozes or looks red, I would call the pediatrician. Otherwise I would give it a little more time.

My pedi said that it can bleed a little and look a little goopy. She moved it for us to see what's underneath so we can get an idea of what she meant by goopy and it looks a bit like puss but she assured us that it's fine and will dry out. Sounds like the bit of blood you saw is ok, if it continues I would call to be sure.
