Baby Names

Breaking my own rule...

I have always said I would only choose names for my kids that have nicknames.  I love nicknames!  Not only can it be a sign of endearment, but it's just fun when your name has options (as long as they're "nice" options).

The ONLY name my husband and I have managed to agree on for our DS is Hayes.  I love the name but it really bothers me that there are NO nickname options for it!  Can anyone think of any?

Re: Breaking my own rule...

  • I don't think 1 syllable names have nicknames in general. I guess you could call him Hay?

Hehe... I suppose that's true.  I guess I don't necessarily think a nickname needs to be a shorter version of the full name.  I don't mind getting a little creative :)

  • What about using the initials of the first and middle name as a nn (if you have a middle name picked out)?

    You could call him "H".

  • I am also a fan of the "nickname" name!! Maybe I'm pointing out the painfully obvious here, but why not wait until you start to see his personality developing and come up with a nickname then? Just an idea Wink
  • Nicknames don't have to be a shortened version of their given name.   Lefty, Slick and Buster are not dependent on a name.  (Not that those are good names.. just ones that came to mind quickly.)

I know a teenager who goes by Bucky.  Pretty sure that has nothing to do with his real name, which I don't even know.  He's been Bucky since he was a baby.

i've always loved hayes. the only reason i would hesitate to use it is because i think people would hear 'haze' instead. you can always come up with a nickname unrelated to his name.

  • I can't decide if it bothers me for people to think "Haze" - the thought did occur to me when we came up with the name... I think I'm more concerned about it being considered a "Last Name" - since his middle name will likely be my maiden name (which is also used as a first name but more common as a last).  Will people make fun of him for having 3 last names?

As for unrelated nicknames, this boy is sure to have MANY of those.  His sister is Toody McGee (among others).  Nothing like her real name :)  I'm just hoping to come up with one that his friends might call him too... but maybe I should realize I have no control over that and just get over it Stick out tongue

  • My little nephews name is Hayden, and we sometimes call him H, Hay, or Hayday for short...but I know those are just family nicknames and probably wouldn't be to much help for ya.

Lol part of why I chose DS's name is because it DOESN'T have a nickname! I chose his name and I want people to call him that. While I love the name William and it honors my late father, I put it in the middle because there are too many NN options.

I was the same way....my son is named Daron.  Some family members/friends call him Lil D.

When it comes down to it, a nickname really isn't that important.  Go with a name you love, a nickname will come when you see your baby.

  • Don't you hate it when you ask for suggestions but get opinions instead?  Who cares if someone else says Hayes is "NMS."  You didn't ask if it was!  This is exactly why my husband and I kept our daughter's name a secret and will keep our son's a secret too!

I do think you got a few good suggestions though - I like "H" as a nickname!  And how cute is "Hayday"??  Good luck!

  • Hay is the only nn I can think of. Most likely no one would call him anything but Hayes because it's a 1 syllable name.

  • Yeah I was like that too... but then I loved the name Alyssa too much :) Thankfully the girls did the work for me and shortened it to Asya :) (it is a russian nn), so now I have Anya and Asya :)

  • With 1 syllable names, people tend to lengthen them for a nn, like my cousin is Mark and I'm pretty sure everyone calls him Marky. I'm not so sure Hayes-y would work lol. You will come up with one based on his personality most likely!

I'm a "n00b" myself, so I'm not gonna critisize!  And honestly, I was a bit hesitant to post this question because I knew I'd probably get some negative opinions on the name... but oh well, I can't expect everyone to love it Tongue Tied

  • I don't think nicknames are a necessity. Just my opinion. Maybe you'll end up calling him Turtle Butt for all I know. My DD is often called Monkey or Mo and her name is Anna. Her nickname is based off from her personality. Why not wait until you know your son's personality before worrying about nicknames unnecessarily?

haha, it totally would in Australia, they love adding y's to names!

We picked seemingly nn free names, however Reed became Reedo very quickly.  I was surprised by that one because it is sort of obvious, but had never crossed my mind before he was born.  He was often Reedo Burrito too.  We called Pierce "P-diddy" for awhile and his brother calls him Piercey Pie so basically I think you should just go with Hayes and wait to see what develops.  I like Hayes a lot btw.

I vote H as well.  I have several friends who call their kid by their first initial as a nickname.

Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

i agree that nicknames happen organically and don't have to be a short version of the actual name.

my brother's name is Max and family calls him Muzlit .wtf, right? but it's just always been that way. your kid will have a nickname--name him what you love and don't worry about it :-)

OP don't confuse, NMS, with negative opinions.  You would have known very quickly if anyone had a truly negative opinion on it. You actually got a pretty good review.

If someone had said "why for the love of all that's holy would you do that to an innocent baby?!"

That would have been a negative review, and that has been said to posters before.

I like Hayes, but it's nms, personally.Big Smile
