I swore up and down that I would never buy this thing thinking it's overpriced.
The guilt of having three children, knowing the third is getting hand-me-down EVERYTHING (even clothes - from friends, coworkers, etc.) made me buy one for DS who is six months and teething like mad (popped his first tooth last week and the second is about to come through).
I'll be damned if this stupid/expensive thing isn't the best thing that's ever happened to him. And the best $17 I've spent in a long time.
Re: Sophie the Giraffe
My FIL sent us one! Apparently, DH had one when he was a little boy, so FIL wanted J to have one. I probably would have ended up buying it since I buy a lot.
J likes it well enough, but he hasn't quite gotten the hang of gnawing on it. It's more fun to gnaw on his hands, and my fingers.
TTC #1 Cycle 14 - IUI#1=BFN, IUI#2=BFP | TTC #2 Cycle 8=BFP!!

I refused to succumb to the hype and did not get it for DD. DS was 6.5 mo at Xmas and I needed some gift ideas so FIL/SMIL got it for him. He must be the only baby in the world who does not care for it! He does not chew it any more than his other toys and not-toys and he throws it just as much as everything else. He only has 8 teeth so there is stil hope he'll love it but for now I chalk it up to "money wasted (but not by me)."
We got one too...DS loved it so much we called her his girlfriend from about 4 - 10 months!
I always thought it was funny that when we finally put Sophie away around 12 months, her spots had visibly faded. I bought a Sophie for a friend's shower and compared the two...I'm really hoping that my Sophie just faded in the sunlight since she was in the car a lot, and DS didn't ingest a lot of giraffe spots!
And that's the hard part with baby stuff right? You never know if YOUR kid would like something enough to spend the $ on it.
I think that's why it's hard when people ask me what baby stuff they need for their not-yet-born child. It's like - "I have no idea, will your kid absolutely love a bouncy seat or be like all three of my kids and think a bouncy seat is a torture chamber?"or "Will your kid be like my first kid who loved the Bjorn carrier, or be like my third colicky kid who didn't like the Bjorn but loved the Moby wrap so much I would have paid $500 for it - even though I got it hand me down for free from my SIL - because there were nights when Moby was the only way to calm the crying."
We love Sophie. 17 bucks? Yeah, but it's a high quality toy.
And to the other poster about the spots fading - I did read that on some reviews. The spots are actually food paint, I believe.
My mom purchased it for DS, and it was his favorite toy for a solid year.
Sofie stayed in the car and I cleaned her with Clorox wipes--she is now albino.
Clorox? is that safe? you wash with water afterwards, right? I don't think I'd let my baby suck on something that was cleaned with Clorox!
Clorox wipes don't have bleach in them. I learned this when DD #2 got c dif - the hospital told us to wash everything down with diluted bleach/water solution to get rid of germs - toys, everything - and we were like "but we use the wipes!" Turns out the wipes do not have bleach, so they don't kill the really nasty germs like c dif.
Sophia actually has on the package that she shouldn't be cleaned with wipes - just soap and water.
CDiff can be killed with soap and water - hand sanitizers don't kill it but handwashing is sufficient. So if Sophie was cleaned with dish soap and water - germs are killed and spots stay safe.
