I just came back from an OB appt. I had been on the fence about switching practices to deliver at a fancy new maternity campus opening this June. However the rates available on ICAN were very low for this hospital compared to the hospital where I delivered my son and I really love the docs in my current practice. After giving it a lot of thought and talking to my local ICAN organizer, we decided to stick with our current practice and deliver at a hospital with one of the highest VBAC rates in NJ. Today, we had an appt with one of my favorites, who is a VBAC-er herself. It was awesome and I feel very confident about my decision to stick with the practice and attempt a VBAC. One thing that she said, which I thought was very interesting and I wanted to pass along - especially for those of you who had doc telling you that you were not a good candidate for a VBAC because of a failed induction - is that she said natural labor is completely different from artificially induced labor. With my son, my water started to leak but I never went into labor and was induced. I fully dialated, pushed, had trouble with his position (he was "ROA") and ultimately started to "undialate." At this point, my water had been broken for over 24 hours and they worried about infection, so I had the CS. Although I had dialated fully, I never had the urge to push. I knew when I had to because I could feel the contractions, but there was not urgency and ultimately I couldn't get him out. She told me that I cannot predict how my body will react to a "natural" labor as opposed to an induction. She said it's completely different.
Re: Really wonderful appt and some info I thought I'd share
That's awesome!
My main Ob/Gyn in the practice that delivered my daughter (he was the one I saw for my well-woman care but he doesn't do deliveries anymore) was in agreement that a failed induction was different from true FTP but it makes me happen whenever another doctor agrees with him!
On that same note, you may not even know how you'll react to a second induction. My midwife had to induce one of her VBAC patients whose C/S was a lot like mine, after a failed induction that stalled out before full dilation. This time, she dilated all the way to 10 (I am SURE my midwife was much more patient with this than the doctors that handled my induction with DD) and only pushed for an hour. It made me so happy to hear that.

Great news. As a failed induction, I love hearing good stories. A doula friend of mine also told me that because we went through the whole induction process, my body got some "practice" dilating and even pushing. So, even a failure might better prepare my body to do it's thing next time. I'll hang on any string - no matter how thin.
I'm happy you found a supportive doc (it really doesn't get more supportive than an actual vbac-er, huh?).
Your first labor sounds just like mine, except I didn't fully dilate and push (due to positioning).
