CDing issues, please help!

OK, so I've been using mostly the kissaluvs fitteds with thirsties covers. I haven't had any issues washing them and I've been drying them in the sun. However, they are pretty rough once they are dry. I've been using them anyway, but a few days ago DS started getting a diaper rash. I used the California baby diaper cream and diaper wash, but it didn't seem to help much.

Eventually, as it started to get worse, I decided to use disposables for a bit and use some stronger diaper rash cream (bourdreax's) which has mostly cleared up the diaper rash, but the disposables are irritating his skin.

So, I'm wondering, 1) if you have some other suggestions for CD friendly diaper rash cream that is better than CA baby and 2) how bad is it if I dry my CDs in the dryer on low? It makes them much softer and I think that would be better on his skin, which seems to be pretty sensitive.

Also, how often should I be changing him as a newborn.  I'm changing every 2-3 hrs and he is usually pretty wet, I'm thinking I should change more often during the day, though he seems to pee or poo almost as soon as I change him.  Is there some sort of liner I can use to keep him drier longer?

1. dry them in the dryer or they'll be crunchy. It's fine.

2. 2-3 hours is too long, in my opinion. A newborn should be changed every hour or two. 

3. He's probably rashy from being in wet diapers. First, change him more often, and second, buy some cheap fleece from the bargain bin and cut it into strips to lay against his skin. 

4. If you fix the root of the rash problem then the rash should clear up. If it doesn't, you can order CJ's Butter online and it should help.

5. If he already has a rash, if you're using commercial wipes, try to use less of them in favor of plain water. Use washcloths with water for pees.  The chemicals could be bothering his broken skin.

i'd def. change more often.  some days we'd be changing every hour.  thats the wonderful thing about CDs, since you just throw them in the wash and reuse there's no feeling guilty about waste.  we change as soon as we notice he's wet or dirty, there's no point in making him sit in it, just causes more rashes

The dryer is perfectly fine. I dry all my diapers in the dryer.  It will keep them from being crunchy. 

You should change him every 2 hours at most.

Ditto pp on the fleece liners. It will help keep his skin dry.

CA Baby always made any rash DD had worse.  CJ BUTTer is awesome.

I dry my diapers outside if it's sunny and then I run them on "air fluff" for 15-20 min to soften them up.  I would not use them as stiff as they are from outside, although I don't know if that's related to your rash issue.

Thanks, I'm washing a new load now and I'll use the dryer to dry them.  I'll also change more often...I suspect that is the issue, I just hate waking him up, but might as well to prevent this rash from getting worse!

You can air dry them and just fluff them in the dryer if you want or just dry the fitted part and line dry the covers.

 As for the rash DD had a really nasty diaper rash when we first came home and a big part of it was using disposible wipes on new baby skin.  If you are using disposable try using some wash cloths with a little warm water instead or cut up a flannel recieving blanket to use as wipes.  This made a huge difference with DD and it's easier to just throw the cloth wipes in the wash with the diapers than having to seperate out the disposibles before you wash.

 As for creams you can use Bordeux with your cloth if you pick up some fleece at the fabric store and just cut it into a liner that covers the main part of the diaper (you dont have to hem it since it wont fray) put this on top of the diaper and then just wash this SEPERATELY from your diapers so that the rash cream doesnt just get on them when you wash.

You need to be changing every 1 1/2 generally at that age.

1. I use Aveeno. Many people swear by CJ's BUTTer

2. It's not bad at all. I always put my fitteds in the dryer after line drying, just to fluff them up and make them soft.

3. Change every 2 hours. If you still have wetness, try changing more often for now, or you can use fleece liners. Just get some bulk fleece and cut it up. You don't need to serge it or anything, and you can throw them right in the wash.

I wouldn't wake him to change his diaper at night- just change him before you feed him, and be sure he's in a stay dry diaper (or using a fleece liner). The fleece will pull moisture away from his skin. Also, let him air out as much as possible, maybe on a towel or something.

I haven't been using disposable wipes, we learned that lesson with DS#1.  I've been using either water and cloth wipes or water and CA baby diaper area wash.

A
