Anemia

Went to the doc's today and she said that I'm showing up slightly anemic and recommended that I start taking iron supplements. Has anyone else experienced this and what did your doc recommend? Thanks!

Re: Anemia

  • I was also found to have low hemoglobin and iron, I think it must be common at this point! My doctor prescribed iron pills (that contain a stoll softner too yay lol).

    ETA: Stool* lol

  • Yes -- I've been anemic throughout this pregnancy...  I take Iron Aid supplements, bought at Whole Foods.  A lot of the ladies on here have mentioned issues with pooping because of their iron supplements, but I haven't had any of those?!

    Good Luck!

  • I did/do... I take an iron pill called Vitron C with OJ in the morning and a stool softener (important, iron REALLY constipates you!)... I take my prenatals at night with milk...

Just an FYI, don't take iron with milk, take it with a citrus or water and don't take it with your prenatal. Iron and calcium fight for the same receptor to be transported to your cells. So if you take them together, you don't get the full benefits of either. Vitamin C helps you absorb the Iron better but again competes with calcium so don't use OJ to take your prenatal. Vitamin D helps with calcium absorption...

I took a nutrition class in college and this whole vitamin thing has stuck in my head for YEARS... I hate taking pills so I want to make sure I am not taking anything in vain... :-)

  • Thanks for the replies. Do you have brand names that you can recommend - esp the one's with the stool softeners? I read online that its good to take it with prune juice. DH was weirdly excited, "Great! more steak nights!" haha

  • My midwife recommended Slow Fe and while it is suppose to be easier on your digestive system I don't think it has a stool softener, so I take one of those too!

And I echo everything the pp said about when to take it and what/what not to take it with!

  • I had the same issues and continue to have the same issues because I am allergic to the iron supplements they told me to take.  Now the only thing I can do is eat foods that are iron rich, which you can google what they are to help. Good luck and just remember that if you have to take the iron supplements stool softeners will be your best friend.
