crib toy for a 10 month old?

so the peanut is sleeping a bit more regularly (finally!) and we are trying to let him entertain himself if he wakes up super early in the morning in the hopes that he will put himself back to sleep. i see those kick pianos that tie to the crib all over the place but i wonder if it is geared to a younger baby who can't sit up and stand. any toy recommendations or should i avoid putting something in there that may stimulate him even more?

At 10 mos., Geneva had her lovey and maybe a tiny pillow. I didn't want any further distractions. But there are plenty of folks that like the aquariums and loveys that light up.

But my question is, if you're trying to get him back to sleep, why put more stuff to entertain him in there?

  • that's mainly why i am asking - a lot of moms have told me that if their child can entertain themselves for a while they will eventually go back to sleep versus crying until mom comes. i have no idea if is wise to even introduce something like that or if it is what to put in there.

Ah, okay. I see what you're saying. Since we did CIO with Geneva, we sort of followed that same principle in getting her back to sleep (especially with early wakings). Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Not sure if you saw someone on here joking the other day about turning the monitor off and rolling over back to sleep - but that's what I would do.

    Good luck!

  • Mia would entertain herself some mornings with the Rainforest Soother thing in her crib.  Not always, but some days.

  • DS has his FP Seahorse, his paci and a stuffed giraffe in his crib.  Sometimes I give him a soft book to play with when we put him down at night.  We took out his aquarium crib soother (that he loved) at 6 months because he kept wedging under it once we lowered his mattress.  A few soft toys seem to work pretty well though.
  • We still have the rainforest soother in Noah's crib and he'll turn it on if he feels like playing.  It's been in his crib since birthday.  Now that he's 19 months old, he has a ton of stuffed animals and a couple of blankets in there too.

  • thanks for all the advice!
