Is Aubrey a boy's name?

I really am liking Audrey and Aubrey for a girl, but looking on the internet I see that Aubrey is a boy's name. I have never heard of this for a boy, and frankily can not imagine a boy named Aubrey. My husband likes Aubrey better than Audrey. What are your opinions on these two names?

Re: Is Aubrey a boy's name?

  • I just met a guy named Aubrey. I much prefer Audrey for a girl. It's classier, IMO.

  • I know men named Aubrey but now I see only baby girls with this name. Although it is traditionally a male name, I think the girls have taken it over.

  • It was a traditionally male name, but I think it's safe to say the girl side has taken this one over. I can't imagine it on a boy either...doesn't sound remotely masculine to me, but that's just my opinion.
  • I would, 100 percent of the time, assume Aubrey was a girl.

    I do prefer Audrey, though.

    Aubrey is the new Ashley.

Haha, this. I'm not a fan of it for either. Too feminine for a boy, but sounds wrong for a girl. Audrey is lovely though.

Serious question: Is there like a website or organization somewhere that has a pink box of names and a blue box of names and is in charge of this? I see so many people who are like "But thats a BOYS name!1!! ZOMG!1!" and I have to wonder who is making these rules? LOL, j/k!

However, I found this very interesting website: https://deanesmay.com/2007/05/29/girl-names-vs-boy-names/ which has a nice long list of "boys names", like: Ariel. Carol. Evelyn. Meredith. Uh-oh..... ;)

Who cares if it used to be a boys name? Seriously, if I met a male Aubrey now I would think it was a girls name and feel sorry for him. There is like a world of difference between gender bending names like Madison, Aubrey, Meredith vs. ones like Rowan, Connor etc.

Genders of words and names in languages go way, way back. Much farther than the existence of any website. The bolded is precisely why we care. Because it's embarrassing/confusing when parents start using boy names for girls. The last parent to "get the memo" that the name has "switched sides" ends up regretting naming their child a name that cause folks like you to pity their child. I am guessing this person is asking for clarity about Aubrey because she doesn't want to make a mistake like that.

  • At first glance I would think Aubrey was a girl.
  • IMO Audrey is so much nicer.

I think it's more of a girl's name, but I did go to H.S. with a boy Aubrey.

  • I think it's safe to say that it was a boys name, but has now switched. However I do think Boy when I hear Aubrey because one of my great-uncles has that name.

  • I wouldn't use Aubrey on a boy.

I think it's gone the way of Sydney and Ashley---girls only territory.

  • The only man I've heard of with this name is Aubrey Huff, a player for the San Francisco Giants. These days it's definitely being used for girls.

  • Aubrey is my grandpa's name, so I had always considered it to be a boy name. However, I met a little girl named Aubrey, and so now I (personally) consider it a unisex name, even though most people think girl.

    oops!!
  • I think that it's pretty much been taken over by girls.  However, I grew up hearing about my grandma's brother Aubrey, so it sounds odd to me when I hear it on a little girl.  I love Audrey, though.

  • It is a boy's name.  When my bff named her daughter Aubrey I had only heard it as a boy, there was an Oriole named Aubrey, but now it is common as  girls name.
  • I agree that it came about as a surname / male name (as have many others); in fact, DD's name was inspired by a (male) literary character whose last name is Aubrey.  I love it, though. Smile

  • My DD is Aubrey, so of course I love the name! I also like Audrey...we went back and forth between the two. It is traditionally a male name, but I only know one male named Aubrey and he's my grandfather's age. If you like the name go for it! :)
  • To me, it's a name of a nice conditioner that I sometimes use:

Like it on my hair. Not a fan for a person.

PS- I always thought Meredith Willson was a woman. You learn something new every day....

  • I only know girls named Aubrey, but I've always loved it for a boy instead.

    Drake's real name is Aubrey.

  • It's definitely a girl's name IMO.  It just sounds feminine to me.
