Thank you to everyone for the well wishes/prayers, etc. My husband went in for surgery at 1:00, and came out around 6:00 yesterday. They removed about 6 inches of his colon and reattached it. The fear was that there wasn't enough healthy colon to reattach (which would have him looking at 5 months of wearing a "bag") and that he wasn't healthy enough to endure the surgery because of his widespread infection.
Everything went as well as possible though. There was enough healthy colon to reattach it, and he made it through the surgery just fine. I stayed for about 3 hours post op with him. He couldn't speak English during the post-op, just Italian which was actually freaking hilarious. The nurses were entertained. His mom flew in from Portland and was able to stay with him (and translate for the nurses!) and then I drove back home to Austin, because the kids were having a hard time at their aunt's house. Got home around midnight to pick up two crying, very scared kiddos. Trying to give them some sense of normalcy today and we will go to pick dh up from the Hospital either Friday night or Sat. morning.
All in all, it's a good outlook for the situation, so we're very happy. I'm glad his mom is here to watch him in the hospital so that I can be here with the kids. As crazy as that sounds, I need for the kids to be not scared so that we don't have freak-outs from every corner of our household. We both decided that was best. MIL will be flying back home Saturday.
Re: dh update
Phew! Good to hear.
Good luck with the kids and minimal freak outage!

You are such a great mom and wife. I can't imagine driving in at midnight after what must have been an exhausting day. Please let us know if there's anything we can do.
