Calorie Counting

Anyone else doing calorie counting while pregnant?

Prepregnancy I was a devoted calorie counter. After BFP I quit completely, then I gained too much weight, and now I have started counting again to help manage my weight gain. I can't be the only one... right? I have adjusted my daily calorie intake goal, but I'm not 100% sure what I should be aiming for...

Re: Calorie Counting

  • I would calorie count before BFP but now I'm not while pregnant. I do keep a food diary to track what I eat. I can kind of eyeball most things I'm eating to check if I'm staying on track. I believe while pregnant you should aim for about 2,000 calories.

  • I don't do it ... but I do like how the new food pyramid web site let's you put in your age and weight and height and for the "mom" one you can select pregnant or breastfeeding. Then it tells you based on your trimester the approximate calories you should be aiming for (as well as the amounts in each food group of course).

Of course I would go by anything my nutritionist or doctor recommended based on my very specific scenario. But, it sounds like you're not that worried and just want a guideline. So that link/site might be helpful to you.

  • You should check out BabyFit.com It sets a calorie range and helps you tally your daily totals. It's really similar to SparkPeople but tailored for the pregnant set.
  • I do!  I either counted calories or did WW pre-pregnancy for years.  After BFP, I stopped, and I think without the accountability I got a little too lax with my habits and gained a little more than necessary early on.  So, I started counting again.  I don't have a specific target - I aim for somewhere in the 2000-2300 cal range.  But, that's based on my stats on the food pyramid thing and what seems to be working for keeping my weight gain on track where it should be.  I'm not terribly strict about it - if I go over one day because I'm extra hungry, so be it.  But, I find if I'm keeping a tally, it *sometimes* helps me think twice about that big bowl of ice cream after dinner.

    Another vote for mypyramid.gov!

I don't count calories now--but I do enter my food choices several times a week to make sure I am hitting an adequate amount of servings from each of the food groups! I enter my intake through snack time each day--and then try to make dinner based on the food groups that are lacking for the day.
