Babies: 3 - 6 Months

My 6 Month old still doesn't sit up

My baby girl turned 6 months on May 6th, and still doesn't sit up, is that normal? What can I do to help her?

I put her on her tummy, but she just rolls over and scoots around

Re: My 6 Month old still doesn't sit up

  • DS is almost 5 months and will only sit with extensive help (we have to get him in position and give him something to hold onto or he'll flop).  What does she do if you sit her up?

  • I'll put her in a sitting position and she'll just flop over. Yesterday I sat her on the bed and she held it for like 1 second and fell to her side :/
  • My nephew didn't sit on his own until 7 months and then he decided to do it literally overnight. If you are concerned talk to your pedi but I personally would give your LO more time.

  • Ally will be 6 months thursday. She will sit unassisted for like 2 secs. then she flops. I think it takes a little longer for them to learn to balance.
  • My 3 year old didn't sit up on his own until he was 7 months old and we had to sit him in that position.  He didn't actually push himself to sitting until he was closer to 8 months.  He did that and crawled all in the same day.

  • DD didn't sit till 8 months, and she's totally fine.

  • Thank you so much!! And thank you to all the other posters!! I'm so glad its normal!!. Im in a group on cafemom and all the babies are either my babys age or younger and a lot of them seemed to be sitting already, some even standing up in their cribs, so I was starting to get worried!!. Thank you ladies for easing my mind  Smile

According to the Baby Center chart, only about half of the six month old babies out there can actually sit up on their own.

I don't think it has to be a mastered skill for another month or so, but you can always ask your pedi for advice.  Also, you might consider reposting this to the 6-9 month board, as most of their babies can probably sit already, so they would be more likely to have good tips.

I think if you just practice with LO as much as possible, eventually the skill will come.
