Making the switch from Zantac to Prevacid...HELP!!!

So yesterday we took LO off Zantac, and started Prevacid.  She was taking .2ml of Zantac twice a day, and she is taking the Prevacid 1x per day.  I just thought the zantac wasn't really working, until we stopped it, the last day and a half have been awful!  She is spitting up a lot, and is extremely fussy!  She has only had one dose of the prevacid so far (last night).  Is it supposed to get worse before it gets better? How long are we going to have to deal with this?  At this point I'm tempted just to put her back on the zantac...

Thanks!

  • PPI's like prevacid take up to a week to start working.

  • We had to switch from Zantac to Prevacid as well with our little guy.  We noticed an improvement a few days after switching but at that point we also went from the entire dose at one time to splitting it up to twice daily dosing.  I didn't see anyone else also comment on symptoms returing once weight gain affected the dosing so not sure if others have seen this or if my champion weight gainer is the only one.  Both with the Zantac and Prevacid about 3 weeks after starting them our son had gained enough weight that the dosing we had been using was not enough and symptoms would return.  At this point we would call the doctor and have the amount given increased and would see a reduction in a day or two.
  • My son switched from Zantac to Prevacid after two weeks on Zantac...because it didn't seem to be working. Prevacid started working immediatley with the fussiness...but the spiting up continued until he was about 10 months old. He is now 11 1/2 months old and has been on prevacid since he was 2 1/2 months old. My main concern was to stop him from being in pain. The spitting up concerned me but not as much because its normal for babies to spit up anyway but the meds did stop it from being so much at once. Maybe you should go back to the Zantac if it was helping your LO with the pain of reflux...or try the Prevacid for another week or two.
