WTF, Atlanta?

So, are mothers of toddlers going to have to start carrying around their child's birth certificate or some other proof of age? How else would something like this be enforceable? Public nudity? Indecency? WTF?

Forest Park Restricts Public Breast Feeding

Posted: 6:09 am EDT May 17, 2011Updated: 7:08 am EDT May 17, 2011

FOREST PARK, Ga. -- A new law in metro Atlanta will limit breast feeding in public. On Monday night, Forest Park passed a public indecency ordinance to prevent public nudity. Previously, the city only had a public indecency ordinance that covered adult entertainment businesses.According to the law, no woman can breast feed anyone older than 2 years old in public. City manager John Parker called the law a proactive step.?It sets up a process whereby we can try to control nudity throughout the entire city," Parker said.

Eh, I can live with that.  I ebf LO until 2 years old, but that last year we didn't really do any public feedings.  Once they're on solids it's a lot easier to give him a snack and then bf at home.

Were adult entertainers "breastfeeding" adult customers?  That's pretty gross.  I can only imagine that's the cause of the new law.

Stay at home mom to a house of boys: two amazing stepsons, 12 and 9, and our 4 year old.
  • I don't like the premise behind this law. Why is it okay to set an arbitrary age after which a child may not nurse in public? More importantly, why treat nursing mothers as if they are performing a sexual act by nursing their child? How could it be that one week you're simply feeding your child whereas the next, because they had a birthday, you're committing an act of public indecency? That makes no sense to me whatsoever.

While I can't imagine a 2 year old *needing* to nurse in public, laws like this make me nervous because it sets a precedent where the age could slide younger and younger.

  • Was this really a big problem? I hate laws about bf- if you don't want to see my cha-chas then don't look (which I know is hard b/c they are stellarStick out tongue)

  • I stupidly thought this post was going to be about the Thrashers moving to Winnipeg.

Is there such a problem with public nudity in Atlanta that they needed to start with nursing mothers before moving in on strippers?

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am

  • Well damn - good thing I don't live in Atlanta. I've got one month left before my breastfeeding son turns 2. I rarely nurse in public - but i hate to be told that I'm being indecent on the rare occasion I end up nursing.
