Panicky call from daycare

the daycare called me yesterday and told me a bone was sticking out of Elena's wrist! I dropped everything and ran right over. She was playing normally and had a little hard bump sticking out it was true but nothing as major as they made it sound. I took her to the ER and it was a hardened bruise (calcified hematoma), xray did not show any fracture. It did show "growth arrest" lines which are freaking me out. Means she has times where her growth stops, possibly due to malnutrition. I am really nuts over that, trying to again reassess this low weight/height issue with her doctor.

Maybe it was a blessing in disguise if it helps us figure out what is going ON with her. Such a drama though, about three or four teachers were all trying to show me this alleged bone sticking out. I saw it immediately when they showed it to me, I guess I missed it at home though. Strange.

I always hate calling parents, and I make sure to say "it's not an emergency but...". You never know how your daycare news comes off sounding, and I hate to worry parents especially if they are at work or have to drive far to pick up a child. Glad she is ok!!

OMG I would have freaked out!  I can't believe that they told you she had a bone sticking OUT, I mean come on that it a major deal and a huge difference between a massive bump even and a bone sticking out.

Is malnutrition the only thing that causes growth arrest lines?  Food is such a hard issue, as bad if not worse than sleep IMO. Can't make a kid do either but with sleep they all do pass out as some point.  I know we once went a full week with Andrew having not a drop of food, he was around 2 I think.  He eats like a total bird but funny enough he's a stocking thing and Cooper the string bean is my big eater.

Tons of good thoughts and I hope that this drama leads you to a good place.

  • Oh my. Glad it wasn't as serious as they made it sound. I went through my first emergency call from DCP recently and it was awful, really awful. I'm so sorry they had you worried.

  • Wow that musta been so scary. Have you had her tested for food issues? Liek celiacs or reflux that can cause eating problems

  • Super scary! I think if I would have heard that, I would have literally thought there was a bone protruding out from the skin. I'm glad they called you but maybe they should word it a little different next time?

  • Sorry you guys are going through this. I know that as a kid my bones grew alot slower than my muscles so I would get cramps alot. I know it isn't the same thing as what your LO has, but I wanted to just say that it all works out in the end. I am no more crazy than the next person. :)
  • Thanks everyone! Yeah, it was definitely not as bad as it sounded but they were honestly worried, so I took care of it. I appreciate all the commiseration!!!
