Re: horrible sore throat...can I have cough drops?

  • My OB said that I could take cough drops, benadryl or robitussen. She suggested Tyenol and Benadryl more than the other two though, and Benadryl helped mine a lot. I didn't try the cough drops.

  • Cough drops are full of sugar...but what I found that worked wonders was actually swallowing a spoonful of honey.  It worked amazingly well and is better for you and baby than medication.

  • My OBGYN said cough drops are ok but not to go over board. I personally only take one at night before bed if needed.

If you prefer a more natural remedy you can try gargling with salt water. Warm water with a spoon or honey does wonders too. I hope you feel better soon.

  • Mine said cough drops were fine, but if you just have a sore throat, you can try throat drops instead.  They don't have all the extra anti-cough stuff that cough drops have.

  • You can try Ludens throat drops. (the variety pack is the best) They don't taste bad and don't have the extra cough med. ;) Or hot tea with honey and lemon..very soothing! Get better!

The ones I am taking are sugar free. You do know that honey is full of sugar (natural sugar of course) dont you?

Yes I am aware of that...but for some reason the cough syrup and cough drops bring my bloodsugar levels up alot higher than the honey.  Plus I would take one spoonful of honey in the morning and that was enough to get me through the day.  Cough drops I would have to take continuously in order to get the same relief.  Even the sugar free cough drops have a sugar alcohol according to my dr which can bring bloodsugars up.

  • On my paper from the doctor it says I can have/use these for a sore throat:

    • chloraseptic throat spray
    • cepacol lozenges

For a cold/congestion/cough it says I can use:

    • All cough drops
    • Robitussin DM
    • Tylenol Cold Day (non-drowsy)
    • Actifed Plain
    • Thera-Flu (not if you have hypertension)
    • Coricidin (take if you have hypertension, but don't take Tylenol with Coricidin)
    • Benadryl (okay in first trimester)
    • Mucinex (do not take with Robitussin)
