TMI...what should I be eating to help...

...move things along? I am in so much pain and have been since yesterday afternoon because I can't "go" despite the fact that I feel like I have to. And I'm totally blanking on what I could eat/drink to help my situation. I did start taking a stool softener (per Dr. recommendation) so I hope that helps sooner rather than later. Sorry to be graphic, it's just that I'm feeling pretty bad...miserable really. Any advice is appreciated.

Re: TMI...what should I be eating to help...

  • I've suffered from GI problems for a long, long time and I always use milk of magnesia to help things along. It's much easier on the system than ex-lax. Phillips cherry flavor is best. HTH!

As far as foods, a big salad should help.

  • Water, water, water. Drink lots and lots of water. The sucky part is that you already feel bad, so then drinking water makes you feel even more bloated. It will help though.

    Maybe something like Metamucil(sp?)

Whole grains, grapes, raisins, prunes, peaches?

I hope you get relief soon. That's a horrible feeling. I've been there, tooSad

  • 2 colace twice a day.

Other than that, uhm... some cheap greasy chinese food always does the trick for me.  I don't know why- but the cheaper the better.

  • Colace-- 1-2 per day but that honestly doesnt help a ton until you get yourself, uh, less backed up since its just a stool softener and doesnt do much for whats already there (sorry if this is graphic but I've had some serious issues in this dept. courtesy of my zofran pump)

Milk of magnesia or Miralax. I've also been trying to eat at least 1 pear a day and drink as much fluid as you can daily. GL- I know how miserable this can be!

  • I was the same way the first couple of months of pregnancy.  I found that eating a prune (or a few) every day helped a little.  But I was puking up everything I had, so I was all out of whack.  Try the prune thing (I get the bottle thing of "Ones" at the grocery store.

  • I don't have anything additional to add to what the ladies have already said, but i have to say that I posted about the same thing last week. I feel for ya! It's rough. I did colace, fruit, fiber bar and miralax and eventually I was able to go. Sorry your in such pain!

Funny you should mention this because I just starting taking Zofran this weekend for vomiting and nausea.  Hmmm?if it's not one thing, it's another!

And yes, things are pretty much "stuck" so I'm fearful that the stool softener won't do much. Ugh.

Thanks for all the tips.  I've upped my water consumption, ate some fruit and a salad (even though eating is about the last thing I wanted to do!)  Next up, I'll be heading to the store for prunes, fiber bars, etc.

  • Eating apples and drinking apple juice always helped me. Along with Colace. I was so constipated in third tri, I would get excited to poop.

  • Take a tablespoon of olive oil - um, coats the system. I believe Mineral Oil can be used the same way, but read the label before you try it just to confirm.

I'll add that I bought some Metamucil capsules to get more fiber in my diet. I take 3 about 15 minutes before I eat and that helps a lot. There's also Benefiber powder that dissolves in water and food without adding any flavor. If you're drinking a lot of water anyway, some tablets or powder might be a good way to add some fiber to the system.

  • I'd probably stay away from too much fiber right now until the Colace starts working.  If you add too much fiber to the equation, it's only going to make matters worse.

I'm sending you some #2 vibes.

  • Apple juice. I'm in the same boat with the Zofran pump and totally blame the med for the constipation issue. If you can stomach it, drink 2 glasses of apple juice.
