A friend has been estranged from his father since he was 8 and would like to legally change his last name to his mom's maiden name before he gets married/has kids. Has anyone done this? If so, is it difficult? How much did it cost? How long does it take? Thanks!
Re: NBR: Has anyone done a legal name change. (Not marriage)
He's an adult so it should be pretty easy. Just some paperwork and he might have to appear in front of a judge.
He should be able to find everything on his county's webpage. It shouldn't take long, either. Once he files the paperwork, probably only be a couple weeks. I was amazed how fast our adoption went once we filed papers and we had all sorts of stupid legal loops to jump through.
He should just change it to his wife's name whenever he gets married

Ya, that wouldn't be good.
This free website was set up for brides but it is helpful regardless of the reason you're changing your name. Has all of the forms that you need to submit to the credit card companies, utilities, etc to change your name. Had forms for stuff that I hadn't even thought of.
