TTC after 35

My doctors Appt today!

Okay I am having a Monday on a  Monday!  I had to take my furbaby to the vet today and leave her there all day, they are testing her for cushings disease, so that did not start my morning off right.  Then I was fighting all morning with my regular doctor offfice about some meds they put me on that is not working. Then I head over to the OBGYN office because my miscarriage was back in November, and it has been 6 cycles and nada!  The doctor tells me this is normal and she wants me to wait another 3 cycles, I just lost it on her, I was like I am going to be 37 in October, I don't have 3 cycles just to wait and see!  She asked how I felt about twins, I said well 2 is better than none! :)  So she says well if you don't get pregnant this cycle (I "should" be ovulating this week") lets try clomid.  So she wrote me script for 25 mg of clomid, told me how to take it, and then be back in Day 20 of next cycle so they can do a blood draw.  If not pregnant by then she will up it to 50mg. So atleast we now have a plan of action other than just trying naturally.  :)

Re: My doctors Appt today!

  • I never went this route, so I can't say, but I see all the time on this board people adamantly stating you shouldn't be on clomid without intense monitoring.   You might consider calling your OB back and asking for a referral to an RE (or self-referring if you can).  Best of luck, and I'm sorry about your Monday on a Monday!

  • I am right there with you!  I'll be 39 in a couple of weeks & DH will be 45 in November.  My OB/GYN sent us to a RE before we actually started TTC because of our ages & my diagnosis of adenomyosis.  We just had our first real month of TTC & came up negative, so I got on the phone this morning & have scheduled cycle day 3 to 5 blood work for me & DH will be doing a SA come Friday.  I refuse to waste any time on just seeing if it will happen.  Thankfully DH & both docs are on board with not waiting to see if something is off.

I hope that you are feeling better & get through the day without too much more stress.  Right Hug

  • I'm so sorry about your furbaby. I hope all is well with her.

I second that you should go to an RE.  I am always astounded when I read that people's ob/gyn's put them on Clomid.  My Ob/Gyn wouldn't even run any of the tests on me.  She sent me right to an RE when I asked about any of this.  I know that it's great to have a plan, but please make sure that you are well taken care of with these plans. :)

  • I hope your furbaby is OK, and I'm sorry you're having such a bad day. I agree that you may want to consider moving onto an RE.

I would love to go to an RE, but our insurance does not pay for an RE or any kind of inferility treatment at all, will not even pay for the Clomid.  So I am kinda stuck with the OBGYN, as for the testing, they did all that testing back before the miscarriage, and we know my DH does not have a problem because we actually did get pregnant.  I am kinda stuck!  I do know that last time when we went over not being able to get pregnant they handed my DH a cup and directions on where to take his sample, we waited around and boom that is when i got pregnant, so lets hope the script sitting in my wallet will be enough to get us pregnant again!  Hey I can hope right???
  • You should be monitored (ultrasound) while on clomid.  You should go see an RE.

    Good Luck.

  • My insurance only covers testing for infertility, not any treatments.  However, my RE is listed as an OB/GYN under my insurance, so they have covered my appts and all my monitoring.  I'm still completely OOP for all meds and the actual IUI.  I just found out a week ago that the u/s's were covered except for a $10 copay.  I don't know what kind of insurance you have, but I checked with my RE's office before going in for the initial visit how much everything would cost and they gave me the diagnosis codes as well so I could check with my insurance company on if they covered each specific thing.  Could be worth a shot for you.

But I'm hoping the script in your wallet will be enough for you this time. :)

Sorry to hear about all of your troubles.  How is your furbaby?

Oh that is sooo sweet of you to ask....my furbaby was extremely aggravated when I picked her up, she is not crate trained (she is a couch potato) and had to be in one in all day with 2 other dogs in there barking like crazy, so she was very ready to go home.  I will not know the test results till Friday.  They took her blood prior to the test, then gave her a steriod shot and checked her blood at 1 hour, 2 hour, 4 hour and 6 hour, so she has really been thru it today.  She is now sleeping with DH.  Thank you for asking about her!

  • I'm going to add my voice to that of those saying you need to be monitored on Clomid.  For a lot of women, Clomid thins the uterine lining and doesn't work, and a higher dose would make it worse -- and you have no way of knowing that unless someone is checking.  And for others, it overstimulates and can cause the very serious danger of multiples (by which I mean more than two).  Again, you can't know unless you have at least one ultrasound.  OB's do tend to hand Clomid out like candy, but I still wouldn't use it without monitoring.

  • I am going to track down the link to the woman here on the bump that didn't have monitoring while on Clomid. Granted it is a worst case scenario but she almost lost her ovaries due to hypestimulation, and worse could have put herself in grave danger. She did actually end up in the ER. Doctors hand it out like its candy but there are serious consequences that will only be detected if monitored via ultrasound during the cycle itself (not just day 20.)

Hope your pup feels better soon!

  • I never went this route, as I said, so I'll just pose this as a question: is it logical to ask the OB for additional monitoring if they put you on Clomid? (or beyond logical, will they do it?)

Yes, its logical to ask the OB for monitoring. All it takes is a couple of vaginal ultrasounds to view the ovaries to see how large they are getting. It's not that involved really. I suppose the risks are rare BUT they have major consequences, so why not? My u/s are $170 a piece. Its not pocket change but for the peace of mind and in consideration of everything else we're spending, I think its definitely a good idea.
