So, Feistyfille's post about skipping naps got me thinking, and I'm really curious about the nap progression from 6 months to 12 months. Ruby is about 6.5 months now, and she's taking 3 naps per day. The only consistent thing about her napping is that she wakes up for the morning at 7, and she always goes down at 9 for her first nap. If she wakes up early, we keep her up until 9, unless she's having a meltdown. Her naps are roughly an hour or an hour and fifteen minutes, with a two hour nap thrown in here or there. Her awake times are normally 2 hours, with a longer 2.5 to 3 hour awake period at the end of the day.
I've read that kids start to drop the third nap around 9 months. When that happens, do you just start pushing back the other two naps? Or did you do it earlier?
Thanks,
Amy
Re: s/o naps: nap progression from 6 to 12 months?
At 10.5 months, she moved up to the 12-18 month room because she was much older than the other babies and was using them to pull up, bored with the toys, etc. They put her on the older kids' schedule of 1 nap (from 11:30-2:30). She would also take a short nap when we got home in the evenings. She dropped the second nap around 15 or so months.
On the weekends, we don't have a nap schedule. If we're at home, she falls asleep around noon. If we're out and about, she'll sleep in the car or not nap until we get home. She sleeps in our bed and will tell us when she's ready for a nap, we don't try to force anything (though that would be different if she was the type of child that was extremely cranky without a nap).
The Blog
Kate had no nap schedule until she was 10 months old. Up until that point she would only sleep if she was nursing and not even always then. I would say that she was taking 1-2 30 minute naps a day.
At 10 months, she started naping and we did the 2-3-4 thing. Wake up, 2 hours later nap, 3 hours later nap, 4 hours later bedtime. We had to tweak it a bit around a year to 3-3-4. It worked like a charm until she was maybe 16 months old? Then she started wanting to drop the afternoon nap which she finally did around 18 months. Now she (usually) takes one nap around 12:30.
You chould have set your watch to Jacks naps up until recently. He's been really consistant 3 nap a day kinda guy which are all usually 1 hour with some 2 hour ones rarely thrown in there. We try and keep the same schedule he does at daycare.
Within the last few weeks I think he's dropping his first nap. He'll make his 2nd nap (around early lunch) a 2 hour one. Then he'll usually get another hour in about 4-5 and he's up until 7:30 where he can't go any longer. I'm sure it has a lot to do with the fact that he's crawling like a mad man all over the house so he's getting more and more tired earlier.
He just turned 9 months.
I think the 2,3,4 idea is a good one. DS #2 dropped that third nap around 7.5 months. It got to the point when he was just messing around in there and I knew it was time.
Since then, he goes down at 9:30 for nap 1. I usually put him down around 1:45/2 for the 2nd nap (because DS #1 naps at this time). He probably could go down later, but this works for us.
He usually sleeps 1.5-2 hours per nap.
He goes down for the night at 7:30 and usually sleeps until 7:15. HTH!
