changing table/changing pad question

We received a hand-me down changing table and it has a strap on it. I ordered a changing pad and it has a strap on it too. I'm assuming one strap is to hold the baby down? any ideas what the other strap maybe for? Is the strap on the changing table not needed or is it supposed to hold the pad in place? I'm so confused and don't feel like trying to figure it out on my own. I feel so ridiculous for asking this question.

Re: changing table/changing pad question

  • I'm not sure, but our changing pad had a belt/strap to fasten around the baby's waist while changing him (not sure how realistic this is). There was also a strap to attach the pad to the back of the table/dresser so it won't fall off. Maybe one of the straps on yours is for that.

  • My changing table had the same thing but it also came with a teeny tiny changing pad... I bought a new changing pad that has a belt. I will only use the belt on the new changing pad.

  • Theoretically the strap keeps the baby from rolling off the changing table. Problem is, by the time baby can roll, he or she is usually strong enough to just tip the pad over altogether. We never used the strap on ours.

You shouldn't leave a baby unattended on a changing table, anyway, so I'm not sure what you would gain.

  • Likely, one is for securing the pad and the one on the pad is for the baby, but I don't think I'd use the one on the pad for the baby- it's not like I won't have at least one hand on my baby the entire time. And I'm not going to put my baby on the changing pad just to hang out.

Some changing tables have a frame in which the pad fits and I don't believe those have straps since the frame holds the pad in place.
